Hi Nigel, I have been using a Freelander TD4 for the past seven years. Our last van was a Bordeaux and the Freelander towed it no problem. Acceleration is a bit on the slow side but once the speed has built up it will maintain it with ease. I can get into 5th gear at 50mph and use 3rd gear through roundabouts. As for problems, yes they have their fair share but so do most cars. For more info look on landyzone.co.uk. As I said before I have used one for seven years with no major problems. I find them comfortable and for a 4x4 economical. We have just done 300 miles 100 of which was towing and averaged 35mpg.

Hi Nigel,

They are highly regarded as a towcar but it is hard to find any articles that rate them as a reliable motorcar - quite the reverse actually.

Go to Honest Johns website and put Freelander in and see for yourself; quite depressing really.

The only good news is that the TD4 engine is a good un it's just a shame about nearly everything else seemingly.

LR owners sites are no better and full of stories of epic breakdowns and fixes for same - owners seem to quite revel in the uneliability of the marque!

Hi Nigel

I have just purchased Freelander 2005 TD4 auto facelift. After doing a lot of reseach for about 1 year land rover freelander was the best towcar I could come up with in the price range I could buy.

It tow,s my Bailey like a dream good high nose wieght 140kg if your not heavy right footed 35 to the gal. Its not fast on acceleration its a bit of a plodder but it will get you where you wish to go with a comfortable ride. Servicing is not cheap at rover agents but if you are handy changing oil and filter is not a problem nor disc pads and rear shoes to the diy man.Spares can be obtained from the NET vey easy land rover parts not at sky high prices shop around look at 4x4 mag,s. The facelift Td4 is the one to go for has a BMW engine.

Hope this is soe help to you Steve.

Nigel,

I had a TD4 Freelander and towed with it for about 6 months, I can honestly say it was the worst towcar I have ever owned, and in the end with so many faults/problems Land Rover bought the car back off us.

Get yourself a Kia Sorento and you wont go much wrong.

Nigel,

We have had a TD4 for about 2 years now, it has 137,000 on the clock, we have taken it to France for the past two years. No problems at all. Our caravan is 1450kg and the TD4 tows it fine.
