We had quite an interesting start to our holiday in France: when we were about halfway to Ouistreham it was announced that the Port was closed due to a dockworkers' strike and that we would be diverting to Cherbourg. You could almost hear the collective gasps from other passengers! We landed in Cherbourg at about ten at night and had to rethink our plans for an overnight stop before driving down to the Vendee region. We finished up driving down the peninsular to the A84 and stayed on the first Service area that we came to. Heads down at 1.00 am. There was a steady trickle of vans over the next hour as fellow vanners arrived from the ferry! At least we were a bit nearer for our drive the next day. And I thought that the English were noted for their strikes!

I was stuck on the Caen ring road for 2 1/2 hrs because of farmers protesting about the price they get for milk. The crawled round the ring road at less than walking pace. At least the get off their arses and do something, not just moan.

We were also stuck in the queue around Caen. The farmers even had a police escort. The French woman next to us was going mad shouting to us "I hate the French and France". Must be because the French have 2 basic rights - 1 to protest and 2 to have a lunch - the queueing meant that she couldn't get home to have hers!
