I'm thinking about fitting a computer fan to one of the vents to assist in cooling the fridge temperature.
I know this has been covered before on here.
What size fan (50mm or 120mm), which vent did you fit it to (top or bottom) and was it effective?

I have fitted a 120 fan attached to top vent with nylon nuts and bolts. The fan has short lead with a jack plug to the thermostat so that the vent can be removed with the fan attached. The thermostat sensor attached at top to the cooling fins.

Like the idea of the plug. I was going to have the fan on a switch so it wasn't used all the time eg. overnight (noise). You fitted it to the thermostat? Did you find the fan effective?
 
I have a switch inside the caravan for it ,but the thermostat, and I also have a speed control which are situated behind the fridge at one side of the vent. It is effective as many times mid Summer has been so hot we have had the Aircon running. With the thermostat goes off when cooler at night without rembering to switch off,

I have fitted fridge fans to a number of MH's and caravans over the years. Always to the top vent using zip ties (cheap, quick and no drilling required. My theory being it drags the hot air out rather than trying to push colder air all the way up and out. I have always just fitted an illuminated switch inside rather than go to the bother/expense of a thermostat.
As for noise these fans are very quiet! In silent conditions you can just hear then when inside (and I have good hearing)
I have always tended to switch them off last thing at at night because being a bit cooler overnight they are not necessary.
I find they make a huge difference to the fridge efficiency once the ambient temperature gets to the mid 20's or higher and dont seem to make much difference in lower temps. Its a very cheap and easy mod and, if heading to warmer climes, pretty much essential in my view.
 
Like others mine was fitted at the top, and I did switch off at night as although it’s noise inside was minimal, it was somewhat louder externally and I didn’t want to irritate neighbours who were sleeping with windows open. But in truth it probably would not have come on at night anyway.
 
I've fitted 12volt PC fans.As is the case with most things there are different qualities and properties,rather than use "generic" fans for my PC,s in the past I used those made by "Crucial",these have a ball race bearing rather than a bush type bearing,
 
Like others, I made my own using two 120mm fans. I attached mine to a simple frame behind the top vent.

Thermostats are cheap. And much cheaper still on Temu.

Normally could not hear the fans, except during the night. In 30 degree heat, I could hear the fans switching on and off. Not too noisy though.

I cable tie the temp sensor to the pipe that goes through the fins.

Sounds silly but it is important to fit a fan the right way up, especially if using the fridge on gas, obviously blowing down would keep heat in but also could push CO down and then into the van, we all know the fridges should be room sealed but often there are lots of gaps.

I can’t remember what your van is, but if you have the tall Dometic fridge with the separate freezer. It should have a built in fan.

there will be a 4 way connector with two thick wires and two thin. The two thick ones are the 12V supply to the 12V heater and are only active when the caravan is being towed. The thin wires are the 12V control supply to the fridge controls ( Not on older manual control fridges, but on the newer ones with electronic controls ) White or white/Brown is usually the 0V and on mine the Orange is the +12V control supply and RED (thick) is the +12V to the 12V heater.You can run the fans off that supply I fitted a thermostatic switch attached to the top cooling pipe( which is the condenser) . Others have just fitted and on/off switch. Re fitting in the top or bottom , there is no difference a fan doesn't not suck air , it pushes air which causes an partial vacuum behind its blades (impeller) which draws air in to fill the void . Axial fans have quite a low ability to push against a resistance , ( the blades 'stall' quite easily).The only consideration is accessibility . if fitting them at the bottom vent, ensure they are easily removed as a service engineer will need access to the burner and control brick if a fault develops.
