Hi There, In our Compass Connisseur we would like to replace the three white, wire shelves, the plastic is cracked and broken, revealling some rusty bits underneath. The fridge is an electrolux rm4237, alas this model is no longer around.Have tried several companys include some caravan scrapyards but no luck. Is it possible to scrape and clean up the existing wire shelves and what would i use to recoat them?Thanks.Fred.

Try a local plasticote spray company mine cost £30 for two. They blasted to clean metal and then coated them in a plastic dip coat.

Fred,
I used plasticote as a generic description to cover those companies that specialise is plastic coating which could be by spraying or dipping. Please dont get confused over the name as I now realsie that it can also relate to the spray paints sold by DIY shops. Although you could get a company to dip and blast the shelves clean and then spray paint them using Plasticote paints.

I think what he meant was powder coating, all the original coating is removed, the object is then sprayed with a plastic powder. This powder is electricaly attracted to the object, you just wave the spray gun at the object and the powder will be attracted to all sides of the object. The object is then passed through an oven and the powder is baked on to the object and it gets its gloss.

Hi, So what do you think about using an aerosol of plasticote, if you was to give it 3 coats? after cleaning of the old coating and wire brushing first. Thanks.

That would be okay but removing the old coating can be quite difficult as in some areas it will adhere strongly. You would eithe have to clean to bright metal or rust treat before priming and then top coating. That's why I used a powder coat company.

ThanksOhther Clive, in fact i have started on the shelves already. The coating came off very easily, it was so badly cracked that it came off using a scaper, i then wire brushed and wire wooled the metal work , nice and clean and using plasticote white undercoat i put to coats on ready for the top coats, they are looking better already. Thanks.
