I am going to Italy in August and would like to know what is the moste effective way to cool your fridge, Gas or 240v? I went to the same place 2 years ago and temperature reached 38 degrees and my fridge's cooling was usless. Milk went off after a day. Some seasoned caravanners told me to take the vents off the side of the van to increase air flow, this improved the cooling slightly. That was on my old (1998 TEC) van so hopefully my new one (2009 Hobby) will be better and just in case I have hired a fridge at my pitch for the 8 days. Is there any difference in the cooling with gas or 240v?

The most effective fuel is gas, but the most cost effective is electric.
It is very important to remember that the fridges fitted to vans are limited in their operating temperature to 30 degrees.
Over that and their performance will suffer, the hotter, the worse.
Very good ventilation is necessary and a flow of cooler air over the coils is required.
Removing the outer vent covers is one option, but you have a very large "Hole" or holes, in the side of the van.
If there is room (which is doubtful on the Hobby, fitting fridge fans will help considerably.
If you have an awning up, enclosing the fridge vents,the fridge will be struggling to work at all.

Unless things change, you will not need to worry. At the moment the Med is below average, today Barcelona struggled at 18 degree

Check the sealing to the inside of the van and make sure it is not in the awning side. My Thetford works very well even up to 40 degrees. We have ice every day
