Front shelf replacement. 1997 Sterling Europa 390/2. HELP please

Hi everyone. I have been renovating my little rot box since November. I am now working on the front. The shelf had disintegrated in places at the front so my ‘template’ is largely absent. The ends of the vertical battens had gone too. I had installed a new shelf based on the outline of its predecessor and all was good but it’s not sitting on the brackets in the front locker - there’s a 10mm minimum gap. I then added a strip of full width ply to the underside of the shelf but by this time I’d applied too much downward pressure and some of the screws had pulled out from the interior batten. The shelf looked as though it was tilting down a little towards the front end. Perhaps the ply strip is causing that? So, I have disassembled 😢and need to revise my approach.

My brackets have a slight bend in the horizontal bar - especially the 2 nearest the sides (I have 4 in all).

Can anyone talk me through the stages involved in installing and fitting this shelf correctly? Please . . .🙏 Thank you so much

The photo of the front locker shows the packing whilst the glue cured for the plywood strip but also shows the ‘bent’ bracket. The new shelf and front ply have all been removed now and I am back to battens and aluminium firewall.
