You dont mention if the Fronterra is petrol or diesel as both come in 2.2. We have had both petrol and diesel Fronteras towing a Lexon EB. Both coped without problem , however the petrol was thiirsty and not as relaxed. The diesel on the other hand was an excellent tug , ecomomical 25 - 28 mpg towing, plenty of torque so gear changes was less than the petrol and a very strong engine.

There are several points to watch out for on the Fronterra (as there is with all cars) if it is a diesel make sure the bleed of pipes are replaced every 3 - 4 years it isnt expensive but if left they become porus and creat starting problems when cold. The fuel filter is best left to the garage to replace as it is under the car on the chasis and if you get an air lock it is a sod to clear. All in all though a strong and reliable tow car,

Hi Andrew,

I am a great fan of the Shogun and the 2.5 would have no problems towing 1250kg as it has a max tow of about 2500!

In good condition these cars are superb but after 14 winters all will be showing their age - look for rust everywhere underneath, smoky engines, slick change in the gearbox, signs of overheating, evidence of offroading and evidence of correct servicing

They have a TD engine with two drive belts - one for the camshaft and one for the balancer - make sure these have been changed at the correct interval.

Unless you can be sure about all of the above and the car is in excellent condition walk away. Repair costs can easily exceed the price of the car in cases of rust or failure of major items.

Your call really Andrew, it depends on the relatve condition of each vehicle and the askng price. I run a Mitsubishi Pajero (imported shogun) on a K plate as a tow car and I can assure you that they do not rust and are easy to service yourself, but they can be a bit agricultural performance wise and my 2.5 td is a thirsty beast. My friend runs a Fronterra 2.2 petrol which is better on fuel than mine but not so good at towing imho.
