Can you help? I have puchased two gas attack alarms and wired them to the 12 volt sockets in the caravan. The manufacture said that this is OK. However when I am towing and the fridge is on it send power to the 12 V cockets and trip off the Gas Attack alarms. In the Manual for the gas Alarms it states wire this up to a perm live however I do not require this as when I am not in the van do I need the alarms telling me that someone is gassing it? Can you help and advise on how to wire these?

I wired to a spare fuse on the 12V fuseboard but the radio or 12V socket outputs would probably be OK.

The gas alarm only works when the main 12V switch is on and is unaffected by the 12S socket. When turning on the 12V supply we get an audible test alarm from the gas alarm, this can be annoying on our van as it is quite easy to occasionally confuse the main 12V switch and awning light switch.

If you have an onboard tank and you turn the 12V switch off at night to stop the pump charging (I did this on my old Conquerer) this method will be no good for you.

We leave the 12V switch on all the time whenever we are "in residence" now.

Hi Carol,

These gas alarms were designed to detect flammable hydrocarbon family gases, such as Methane (Natural Gas), Propane and Butane (the bottled camping gases) - and by chance they will also detect other flammable gases such as vaporised Ether (reportedly one of the knock-out gases).

Probably useful in that they will detect a leaking gas supply and one of the knock-out gases, but not the other candidate knock-out gases (which are not flammable and hence not detectable by this device).
