I'll give you a player who I think was better Shiraz although its making me choke to admit it, Maradonna. Another who wasted his talents and got into drink and drugs. I think Best was probably the most skilfull player from the British Isles though.... unless anyone knows different lolol.
 
Lord B although George Best might have been a first class footballer I do not think it fair to say he was the greatest British footballer of all times. Over the years the game has changed considerably regarding the type, size and weight of ball used and the rules. How would you rate the great John Charles against Best, or the Charlton brothers, Tom Finney, etc.? Today the game is far faster and there are some excellent players out there for example Alan Shearer has been brilliant. I think it would be fairer to generalise rather than be specific regarding the great British footballers of both today and past years
 
Colin it's one of those debates people could talk about all night and nobody could furnish the proof of who was the best. Regarding Bobby Charlton and John Charles Colin they were the old kind of centre forward, the target men. Old Charlesy was like a rock, players bounced of him but he didnt cover much of the pitch during a game lolol, he wasn't built for speed with his tree trunk legs. He was deadly with his head though.Charlton was much in the same mould except he did run a little more. Kevin Keegan was always one of my favourite players. Its all speculation who was the best and more impossible to prove who was.
 
As I have said before Lord B we are of a like mind where it would appear that we often have similar opinions. I am not a football fan and I only picked those names as the more well known as I am not very well conversed with the names and skills of either present or past players. All I can say is "UP THE SWANS" where I believe John Charles once played, mind you I could be wrong.
 
I personally have no interest in football so cannot comment

on whether Best was the best or not,although I would think his ability to dribble would have increased as he got older.
 
I think you are right Colin and also Ivor Allchurch I believe played for Swansea. Regarding John Charles he also played for Hereford ending up as their manager and building the team ready for the old 4th Division of the Football League at the expense of Barrow in 1972. It was Colin Addison who was manager by then who got the credit due to Herefords run in the FA Cup. C'mon the Bulls :O)
 
So when will you lot admit you have made a joke about a man dying. Okay some one who abused his body at our expense. If he had been anyone not in public life you wouldnt have even thought about him. But he was, and I still say let the poor man rest in peace and go on to some other joke that rings your bell
 
Although there have been many jokes made on this forum about George Best I have not made any. I am of a similar view point as you in letting the man rest in peace. My point was the hype given to his passing and his funeral by the media. He did not deserve a "state" funeral and the way he abused the help given to him by very eminent medical personnel and still carried on as before without realising the help given. Surely there were more deserving cases out there who would have dearly loved the opportunity of a second chance of life. A very close friend has to travel approx. 40 miles return trip three times a week for specialist treatment and is awaiting a liver transplant. I know there must be a tissue match and possibly a right match has not been found in this case but it does bring it all into perspective when it is so close.

Hi Colin

Yes I agree with everything you say, the Media made it more like a state funeral but It was just the joke that rang my bell. If he had not been in the pulic eye nobody would have even bothered, but he was, so probably that was the reason for the joke in the first place. It's just I don't think we should make fun of anyone dying in the shape of a joke. Probabbly Its just me that is too sensitive

Carol this is the real world in which we now live. Society has a peculiar approach in so much that certain things cannot be said or done because it is not politically correct whereas other topics can be ridiculed and/or sneered at as if it was the right thing to do. It will be necessary to alter the human views on life in general in order to get back to the society whereby each and every one had respect for his/her fellow citizen.

I am of the opinion that the way we are going there will be no respect and it will end up as a dog eat dog state. Certain aspects of our former way of life should be brought back such as teaching both educationally and morals, crime and punishment - let the penalty fit the crime as in the middle east, religion, etc. I could go on but I think I have made my point.
 
Carol I think you made your point in the 5th and 7th posts in this thread which I replied to. Unfortunately for you I had already apologised before you posted but yet, like a puppy with a slipper, you are not prepared to let it drop. No you are not alone, yvonne is of a like opinion to yourself but again from her previous posts she has no room to complain about others. Her joke took me back 15 years to an incident I attended. On arrival at an Army Base I found a young man lay face down with the bulk of a fork lift truck pinning him by both legs just below the buttocks. If he hadn't gone into shock and his blood vessels shut down he would have bled to death and there wasn't a thing we could have done about it. I can assure you that when the forklift was raised the pulp that was formerly his legs wasn't a pretty sight but fortunately he lived. There are a lot of disabled people who caravan and probably read this forum and would find those jokes offensive so you see Carol theres a little of a moron in us all unless you know different and if so maybe you could teach me some of your saintly learnings.

Police have today admitted that George Best was not buried in Belfast last week and in retrospect the decision to cremate him in Hemel Hempsted on Sunday was a mistake!!

Well I never met him but due to me not watching tv I didnt realise he was being buried today so I apologise for the joke. I paid particular attention tonight to the news. To put it mildly I was gobsmacked .. was it a Godly person that was being buried, maybe a Pope, maybe someone who had raised millions for charity or a pioneering surgeon who had saved countless lives. Was it a scientist or a world statesman of the quality of Churchill. I dont think I need to go on for anyone to get my drift. We had arguably the best footballer of a generation but he quit at 25 to lead a playboy lifestyle. Did he put anything back into football like coaching youngsters? In all honestly what did he do except drink himself to death. There are hundreds of people who would love the chance of a liver transplant but they haven,t got the money or the clout that George had. All in all a sad state of affairs and a wasted life. He had so much to offer and if he had given it I could have understood the Godly adulation that was bestowed on him today. At least he's at peace with the world and himself now.
