Grand Designs - Caravan Edition!

So, we have acquired our first caravan. And it was free!

It's nearly as old as me from what I can gather, but doesn't need much at all in the way of repairs (which is great new for it's age!) - mostly just general updating and prettifying. It is a C.I. Cosmos Adventurer 2 berth (and if anyone can tell me anything at all about this model I would greatly appreciate it, as the internet is being very reluctant to do so!) and the Cosmos range was from about the late 80s, but thats all I can find by way of information. I can't even find an 'Adventurer' listed (Voyager, Wayfarer, Explorer, but no Adventurer), but that's what the van is calling itself.

I have plenty of time to make it 'just so,' as both myself and my OH need to do our towing licences. I also should really dig up my front garden so that I can keep it there and start working on the transformation...

For the purposes of insurance - how am I best going about this? So far none of the insurers I have found list C.I. as a brand, let alone a model.

Anyway, pictures to follow! Most definitely in the 'before' stages at the moment, but can't wait to get started!!

CI were in business from 1963 until they went into liquidation in 1982. At that point they sold the caravan business to Swift. However, the CI brand still lives on through their Italian subsidiary which carried on on its own and now produces motorhomes.

Sounds as if you have an interesting time ahead. Re insurance if you Google classic caravan there are some useful hits both on insurers and other forums. I use Adrian Flux for my Pajero and I know they have a good reputation with car clubs. Also try the C&CC where you can talk to the agent rather than a comparison or on line quote. There are so many vans now where the original company has gone that you should be able to sort something out. Good luck.

Just to add, CI Caravans are still very active in South Africa and had its headquarters outside Pinetown. Our friend worked as a draugfhtsman there or should I say draughtswoman on design. It is now part of the Jurgens group.
