Grand Vitara problem

I have a 2005 Grand Vitara XL7 2.0L diesel nice car tows ok but the engine management warning light keeps coming on then I lose power unable to tow, it has had a new engine management unit fitted but still the light comes on,has anyone else had this problem?

hi seth,the problem happens all the time,the light stays on for a few days then goes out and all is fine for a day or two then comes on again.

hi antony, so fitting a new EDC ecu never sorted it then.this doesnt surprise me.theres a million things it could be ,its not even worth guessing.but in that ecu,s fault memory will be a stored fault,probably with either an fmi,sid or pid number.these are a SAE numbers and a industry standard.its got a fault thats making it derate,very common.faults like these are very rarely the control unit .a good dealer should sort it out.

Thanks for the comments Seth,I have booked in my main dealer for service and hope they can trace the problem,they say the fault code will be erased after 20 turns of the ignition hope it stays on for them.

hello again antony,that is most probably true,it must still store an inactive fault though.and if it happens again you,ll catch it as an active fault,either way its something or nothing.a good lad whos product trained will sort it.keep us up to speed on it if you will. cheers seth.

I to a 2.2dti diesel and have experienced the management light coming on with a sudden loss of power, when it first happened it was as if I had suddenly headed into a very strong head wind then I noticed the light on , when the light comes on the engine goes into emergency mode.I had to get to a point where I could quickly turn the engine off , then restart normally the light stayed off .

Now this started to happen in the very cold weather that we had down here in Essex.

It happened when I was on a very short journey and the engine temp was in the blue (COLD) area.

After several repeated happennings, I noticed it happened when the engine revs where over 2000 rpm, keeping the revs below 2000

in each gear ratio the light never came on and the engine behaves normally, when the engine warmed up above the blue zone, I could accelerate above 2000rpm with no problem.

Took the car into my local garage (not a vauxhall Dealer) who connected the car computer , which showed a pid number which relater to a wiring problem, they reset the car computer and cleaned all the wiring connections, since then I have not had any more problems, Allthough I still keep the engine revs below 2000 rpm when the engine temp is in the blue.

The garage forman informed me that above 2000rpm the turbo kicks in, when the engine is warm the turbo is no problem.

Interested as to how you get on when your car goes in for a check up.

Hi Royston,

You have given me something else to watch out for,the light does appear to come on when I do a short trip from cold leave the car to stand for an hour and then re-start(usually the weekly shopping trip).I will keep an eye on the temp guage and the revs in future to see if it makes a difference.When I last talked to the dealer they said it may be a build-up of carbon on the exhaust sensor and a good run would sort it but it did not,they seem reluctant to impart any technical info to customers.It is booked in for service on Monday see what happens,I'll keep you all informed.Thanks.

Just thought I would keep you informed about the problem,I had the car serviced on monday when I picked it up they said the only problem that showed up was a misfire due to me turning the ignition key too quickly!!Apparently when I turn the key I must wait for all the warning lights to go out like the airbags etc and then start the engine, went out today to try this with success but it does seem ages before the warning lights go out,sounds like it must do a sweep of all warning systems before giving the ok.Seems strange they never told me about this when I bought the car two years ago.Thanks for all your comments I am keeping my fingers crossed for the first holiday of the year next week.

hello antony,that is right.all the ecu,s have to do a self check. what this means is every ecu checks its own sensors for faults.and the ecu,s fitted to your car may be oversensitive which is quite common and not a problem.

Check with your local dealer there is a fix for lack of power if its 20td rhw engine.

Hi Brian I to have a 2L TD vitara twice engine light came on for no reason , no fault found what is the fix from dealer ??
