Grange Caravan Club Site is just off the A1(m) motorway. the site was completely renovated in 2005/6 and it is a great site for sightseeng Co.Durham and any of the surrounding counties ie Northumberland, Cleveland and Horth Yorkshire. your mother will not recognise the place as all of the heavy industry inc. Mining and Shipbuilding have been replaced with the natural beauty that was before the Industrial Revolution. A must is Beamish Museum

Thankyou VIP2006 for your reply, its the wifes Grandmother that came from Durham she past away some 15 years ago and this is the first chance the wife will have been to her Grandma's roots. The fatherinlaw is joining us and will show where is mother was born, we hope to visit beamish and the surrounding area's, l have never been to the NorthEast apart from visiting the usual football grounds in my youth following MUFC.
Another place we want visit is the Angel of the North and if not to far Hadrians wall, any other places of interest would be welcomed from those that live or have been to this part of the country, l know we will only scratch the surface in only a weeks stay but may well return next year.

We used to store our caravan at Grange and I fully agree with VIP2006, that it's an excellent base to explore the NE with easy access to the major routes through the area. We've never stayed on the site due to living in Durham.
If travelling from the south, as you exit the A1 motorway turn left on to the A690 dual carriageway towards Durham. If traffic is heavy, immediately go across to the outside lane as you leave the roundabout, as the site is only a hundred yards or so through a right filter and crossover in the middle of the road. If you do overshoot, leave the A690 at the next offslip and turn right at the end of the sliproad. This will put you back on the road to the site.
The "Angel" is only 15/20 minutes north on the A1 and Hadrian's Wall about an hour (depending on the traffic volume passing the Metrocentre)
I'm happy for the mods to pass my email if you want more detailed info,

Ken.

Thanks Ken that's very helpful, we have most of the info now but the bit about moving across to the outside lane was most appreciated.
