Hardboard behind mirrors

Hi,

As part of the restoration of our 96 swift van, I have had to remove the mirrors in the bathroom. Under them were strips of hardboard stapled to the wall board. Is this normal? Do I need to refit these as well when I refit the mirrors, or can I put them straight onto the wall board?
