We are sailing to Holland at 9.00 a.m. on 15th May. Is there a site nearby for an overnight stop on the 14th or can we stay on the docks overnight?

We stayed at Colchester Camping, a Caravan Club affiliated site, when using that ferry route. Open all year, page 99 in the C.C. book - Tel. 01206545551.

When we went that route a few years ago we stayed at a CL in Manningtree which was about 15 minutes away

Sorry about that Chrissylizzie. Perhaps it's getting late in the year. Well that's my excuse. Enjoy Holland anyway.

Has anyone got any experience of staying at the docks at Harwich. We are booked on a ferry in May also and were planning to travel down and park-up the night before. We have stopped on Marine Parade in Dover before and were hoping for something similar. Any ideas?

Hi MAM,

Just beware of illegal imigrants trying to get into the mainland of Europe.

They have been known to break into lorries & unsuspecting caravans.)

Yes, you can stay overnight on the docks at Harwich. I phoned the port yesterday and was told that after checking in drive to the top left and we can overnight there.

Well if that is the case then everyone crossing the channel should take at least one illegal immigrant back across the channel. I could fit 3 in!

Davidc you might have problems there. The only time I have been checked for stowaways was two years ago ( New Year now so three years ago )on leaving the U.K. Nice man checked the cupboard housing the table and fuse box - presumably looking for 5inch wide illegals - but not under the beds or inside the wsrdrobe. Then asked if I had any offensive weapons on board - knives etc. Looked shaken by the contents of the kitchen cutlery draw ! Makes you wonder though.

MikeE....I agree we have only ever been checked once by an over enthusiastic customs guy at Portsmouth on a night ferry to LeHarve. He did exactly the same and asked if we had any knives? When I showed him the bread knife he said "No not that type of knife!! I was totally bemused. We have never been checked on leaving Spain or France or on arrival into the UK.

It was'nt until the following morning we noticed his size 10 boot prints, all greased up from diesel spillage, all over our newly cleaned carpets. Her indoors was not happy! It was a devil to get off! Since then we always take the carpets up, just in case!

Me thinks the French and Spanish are happy to see the illegals coming this way anyway.

It's funny really. We've been searched a few times going out but never coming back. Why would they want to stop illegals from escaping from this country. After all they get everything for free over here.

Anyway back to the topic.I don't know of a site but would always recommend a cl nearby.
