hearing aids

about two years ago our then dog (died of old age the following year) bit hubby on his nose which resulted in him loosing his hearing the following day. It has never returned and is playing hell with him. He's seen loads of docs, had scans, hearing tests etc and he is definitely deaf in one ear. Has anyone out there tried any of the cheapo gadgets to improve hearing, he went to a hearing spectialis who told him he could get one but it would cost about 2K - and he couldn't even try before you buy so gave it a miss.

I've seen gadgets advertised in the club magazines etc, has anyone got any positive comments to make?

Thanks

Sian

Sian, do NOT go for any of the private hearing aids.

The best place to get sorted is through your GP and referral to the local hospital with a hearing centre.

The hearing aids they have are every bit as good as the others but at a fraction of the cost, or even free.

Having acted on behalf of an elederly lady locally who was "talked" into spending 2,000 on a hearing aid from one of the high street outlets, it transpired that she had been bullied into accepting it when all along the hospital had a better unit and it was free!!

She got her money back, but it was a struggle.

The downside to that Damian is the postcode lottery. Depending where you live you can have up to a 12 month wait for one. My mother in law has one but hardly wears it. She says she doesn't like it so now we either have to shout or keep repeating ourselves :O(

Many health Authorities offer very modern technology in the way of hearing aids.

The tailored fit of hearing aids is most important to gain maximum benefit for many users and prevent whistling feed back noises.

Go to your health Authority and get checked and see what they can provide before spending a penny.

My mother in law has a hearing aid but she will not wear it she says it amplifies backgound noise more than speach.

thanks everyone, that's what I've been saying, but because I'm just the wife my advice is falling on "deaf" ears, so hopefully now we'll make some progress, we sorted the other ear out when he went to see the consultant who managed to pull out the tissue paper he had forgotten he'd put in there when we were in the caravan because he said I was snoring, it was really embarassing, because the consultant was pulling this stuff out like paul daniels, there was no end to it, I didn't realise the ear could take so much....
