Nick ….My understanding is that the problem lies in the following areas when a reversed polarity supply is fed to products sold to UK specifications.
Please remember I do not claim to be an expert!

1/ Any cartridge fuse fitted to an appliance (which may be in the plug) will not now be in the ideal part of the wiring circuit.
Danger of wiring overheating.

2/ If a lower rated cartridge fuse is fitted to give greater protection to that particular appliance and its lower specification wiring, the protection can revert to that supplied by a higher rated fuse/ contact breaker elsewhere in the circuit.
Danger of wiring overheating.

3/ Any single pole switches to an appliance that are fitted will leave a different part of the wiring circuit live when in the off position.
Danger of electrocution.
