Hi Mark, welcome to Practical Caravan. We clean out our water system by filling our aquaroll with water, then adding some water purifying tablets or solution (buy from any Chemist). We run the water through until all the pipes are full, including the water heater, then leave for 24 hours. Then we run the taps and drain all the water until the aquaroll is empty. Usually we then run fresh water through until that aquaroll too is empty, leaving the pipes clean, but containing fresh water rather than water containing the purifying solution.

We've done this for ten years, in our current van, with no untowards effects on the pipework, heater, or taps.

Just a word of caution:

It could be bad advice plus being unnecessary, leaving sterilising agents in the water heater for 24 hours as some of these products contain chlorine, a corrosive.

24 hours is unnecessarily long and achieves little but increases the risk.

Adequate sterilisation can be achieved at minimal corrosion risk by the use of "normal" dilution Milton solution but leave for only two hours.

Even this is counter to the complete ban on chlorine agents given specifically in Truma's publications, but in practice appears tolerable.

The following extract is taken from our Truma guide - and appears to contradict JTQ's post to a certain extent:

Sterilising

When cleaning the water system at the start or the end

of the season it is advisable to use a sterilising fluid e.g.

Chempro SDP or similar. Flush the system thoroughly to remove the effective fluid traces. After sterilising the system at the start of the season it is recommended that in the Ultraflow Filter Housing a new filter cartridge should be fitted.

Fortunately we appear not to have done any damage by leaving the fluid for 24 hours!

My comment was specifically addressing chlorine based products. I thought Chempro SDP has been pulled from manufacture and suspect it was a sulphite based product.

My Truma boiler manual has a very different warning that aligns well with my experiences with stainless and sterilising agents, I quote;-

"To sterilise the water we recommend

"Certisil-Argento". Other products, particularly those

containing chlorine are unsuitable".

It also goes on to quote how they feel biological control should be undertaken :-

"To avoid infestation by micro-organisms, the boiler must be

heated to 70

Hi JTQ, Chempro may well have been withdrawn - because our manual is ten years old (at least - that's the age of the caravan)!
