Just wanted to share my recent experience with you all.

I am a female & my husband usually tows & sets the caravan up. This time I went on my own (unless you count my 3 year old daughter) to our caravan storage, pulled out my van, hitched up & towed it down the road to the CL site. I then went on to set everything up including levelling on blocks, water, gas, electrics, waste etc.

Went home to pick up son from school & the OH & returned to the caravan. After my OH scrutinised everything to make sure it was all ok, he actually was chuffed that I had done everything well.

I am so pleased I have set the caravan up on my own, it has given me such confidence. I now just need some more towing practise.

I also want to say to any ladies out there considering this to just do it. It is not that hard. Just take your time. I wanted to be able to tow & set up on my own as OH can not always get away on a Friday due to work commitments, now I can go with my children & hubby can joins us later on.

Just wanted to share that!!

Well done TLC

I'm sure that your confidence will grow with more towing practice so you've now expanded the availability of your caravan, no wonder your husband's chuffed.

Well done TLC

We ladies are not always given credit where credit is due. A couple of years ago, I took our 'van up to Clitheroe on my own (about a 60 mile drive), set up everything including putting up the awning (all nearly 5ft of me) etc, etc before driving to the station to pick my husband up who had spent the afternoon sitting around in a business meeting in Manchester. The chap who showed me which pitch we were to have commented that my reversing on to the pitch was the best he had seen all season (it was October). I was aware of people peeping out of their windows...I like to think they would have offered to help if I'd got into difficulty. During that weekend though, I reckon more people greeted me than on any other site we've stayed on. I was really pleased with myself and I think others were impressed...I know Tim was.

Well done sister! I do all our towing and, although I've not done it yet, I feel confident that I could set up alone too. I work in a school so get all the school holidays off so I intend to take the kids on my own or with fellow caravnning lady friends plus kids on occasion even if just for a few days.

Hello ladies , Excellent , I congratulate you all who have the nous to hitch , tow and set up your caravans , I only wish I could get my good lady to do the same , but in my case it would take a miracle . Maybe you will get full equality when I see a lady taking the cassette to the chemical disposal point , lol . Steve .

Well done TLC, you're braver than me!! I reverse the car onto the hitch and can do all that bit but I haven't the nerve to tow yet. Mind you, I don't think Charlie Big Bananas would entertain the idea anyway, he likes to do it himself.

BTW I do the toilette cassette on occasions and if I'm extremely lucky get a go of the mallet to put the windbreak up lol.

Val.

I do empty the cassette loo as well. But I'd much rather leave that job to hubby! He just does it sooo much better than me! lol

Men have to be useful for something Rosies, emptying the cassette is a starter ;0)

Welcome to the caravanning ladies circle, have been a lady that tows since my son and daughter were little (both adults now)and much of that time in the early days it was just me and the children so emptying the toilet is old hat. I had the children trained young to fetch water and now my nieces when my sister and I go away with them.

We are similar to yourselves. I work away quite a lot and my wife takes the van to the sites, sets up and I get the train to meet her. Some of the sites we go to are very tricky with some narrow roads and although she is nervous going thru them, she copes really well. She can also reverse it really good aswell. The only thing she waits for me is to help put up the awning.

Regards

Ian

Must confess that I haven't emptied the toilet yet but I had a lesson from Rob last weekend and don't know what all the fuss is about! Changing smelly nappies is far worse and I've done plenty of those in my time being a mum of 3, and doting aunty and previously a registered childminder!

And yes, I can put up and take down the awning on my own but it is only a lightweight porch!

on our last trip to cornwall on the way back craig was getting tired. we live in coventry and as we came off the M5 junction 9 and got into tewkesbury craig asked me to tow. i just got in he explained a few things and i towed the last 40 miles.

ive never really towed before what with the santa fe and the wyoming it must be 40ft. i didnt even bother me.

i must confess i havent done the loo yet. the kids nomally winde each other up as he starts to show me then hes done it buy the time i come out.

when we came back from cornwall he showed me how to unhitch but what with my memory its gone again, lol.

i do need to do more its not fair on him to do most of the towing the setting up etc. so when we go to hillhead in 7 sleeps time i promise to help him more and tie the kids up, lol.

Wow, big respect to u! As a newbie I thought I'd start off on a good foot and have done all the setting up so far myself. Towing is however a different thing altogether! What has impressed me is how u did it with a 3 year old. I have a 4 and 2 year old and it's a bit of a chore keeping them entertained whilst setting up. I keep thinking if I focus my attention on something like a gas bottle they'll disappear! Don't know how I'd do it without the hubby! As for emptying the loo, I've done it all so far myself so feel proud of that (how sad!)

Well done!

Hello again ladies , I have immense respect for you all in the way everyone MUCKS in and sometimes enjoys the chores of modern caravanning . Heres to Women/Lady power and much more of it . If anyone wants to practice , then if they see me on site , you can always empty my cassette , level my van , set up the satellite and clean off the flies . I would give you the biggest, nicest , happiest , flirtiest , toothiest smile you have ever seen , and , maybe a hot cuppa LOL .-- Steve .

Big Al

This is our first caravan & we only bought it last October so I haven't really waited that long. I have always pitched in with setting up etc & I always encourage the kids to help. My 3 year old just loves pulling the aquaroll & my 9 year old is very handy when putting up the awning. It has just taken me a little while to gather confidence to tow. We have quite a big outfit BMW X5 & Lunar Clubman 530, but I now have my head around the lenght!

I think caravanning with a family should be all pitching in to help however old or young, to me that's the whole point of it. Something the whole family can join in with. I don't think this type of hobby/hols is for lazy people. So I think that is why we enjoy it so much :)
