You can read the carver manuals here:

From what i have read they are set at 70c & not adjustable...

Thanks for that, I will down load it at home.

I am on a lovely site and free internet but my old laptop is a bit slow.

Thanks again, had better go make tea for Pat.

Thanks Reg

Quote "is there a dial on the gas control ultra store with out the gas on ."

It is a Carver Cascade, not a Truma Ultrastore.

The temperature is pre set on both gas and electric to 70 degrees.

However, the overheat sensor may have failed, allowing it to run hotter.

Yes sorry about the size of the manuals, I left them 'big' so they print well, the downside is their mostly 6Mb+ and take ages to download on slow connections.

As said the Carver Cascade is set to 70C on electric and around 65C on gas, this is HOT! so there could well be a problem if you can keep your hand under the tap for more than a second or two?.

Most likely is perhaps a heavy build up of limescale on and around the element, or a faulty thermostat.

Also, heavy electrical demands on site will lower the elements efficiency and therefore lengthen the time taken to fully heat the water

Normal times are about an hour from cold until 1997, after then with the bigger element fitted, about 45 minutes.

Whoops got the question back to front!

As Damian says then, if the normal 70C temperature thermostat fails then the overtemp stat will catch it and turn it off at 90C.

This though will be obvious by the need to press the red reset button

Hello Reg and Pat.

Consider the hot water system to be like the traditional hot water tank at home, where you need to mix cold with the hot to bring it down to a more acceptable temperature.

One of the reasons for having the tanks so hot, is s there is enough warm water when mixed for one good shower or two people to have quick ones.

Another reason is to prevent legionnaire infestations in the air cap in side the heater.

I don't believe the thermostat has failed, as depending on the age of the heater you would have a one shot thermal fuse blow, which will prevent further heating, or on the slightly later models, an over temp trip would operated that requires a manual reset.

You might also have water venting into the gas burner from the fusible plug in the heater fin pack, This puts out the flame and will prevent the heater from relighting or the pressure relieve valve will be venting water due to the pressure build up form excessive heating.
