How many people actually pull over?

I've been a caravanner now for five months and have never yet ventured far but on each outing (four) I have always pulled over when I have traffic behind me. On two occasions this has been met with much abuse from more than one driver following me even though I pulled over only about half a mile after they came up behind me.

Has anyone else experienced this and how many people don't bother to pull over?

I always pull over when safe to do so if there's a lot of traffic behind me.

You'll never please all of the people all of the time and I've had abuse hurled at me too. Sometimes as the abusive person passes me, I might delicately hold up my middle finger to them to acknowledge I've understood what they are shouting about.

for general traffic and cars yes, i will always pull over.

for farmers in tractors? no way, i will even slow doen to make their lives more miserable, they never pull over for us.

The same goes for horse boxes, those animals are best used in dog food and glue so no consideration for them either.

lmao

If I am the lead vehicle I will always pull over when it is safe. What annoys me is the Sunday afternoon motorist who causes the build up. They generally drive at a speed whereby it is not possible on ordinary A classified roads to overtake and then Joe Public behind thinks it is the caravan outfit that is causing the problem. Same can be said about HGV and farm tractors/JCB drivers etc.

Mike I can't believe you typed that, shame on you. Where abouts do you live again? I might get in touch with your local pony club and ask them to pay you a visit on horseback.

Radio controlled helicoptors upset babies and horses too you know.

went to heathrow on tuesday from south wales on the m4. At one stage i was approaching 2 lorries side by side. Rather than go in lane 3 to overtake i stayed behind the lorry in lane 2. It took 3 1/4 miles for it to overtake and pull in. Its these drivers people should curse not caravanners. I know there are some HGV drivers on here, so please explain why you do this. It baffles me.

I always pull in when I can safely do so in a convenient layby, it is only good road manner so to do; you only cause annoyance to other roadusers if you are driving a unit which they cannot overtake...think how you would feel if you were stuck behind something. AND....sometimes it is not me in my car and caravan that is holding the flow up, I can tow quite safely at speeds above that which most old folk can drive solo...the times I am stuck behind a dodderer in a blasted Nissan Micra.

A bit off subject but I feel that its our maximum speed limit of 50 mph on single carriage clear wide and straight A roads that is part of the bigger problem.

We cant legally get a move on and travel at the natural speed on these roads.

JTQ, no problems with that in Dorset. The speed limit on all single carriageway roads is gradually being lowered to 50mph so you'll be able to go with the flow. There is a government review of speed limits on all A & B class roads next year so do't be surprised if 50mph becomes maximum with lots of 40/30 and even 20 in "high risk" zones.

I would only think of pulling over if I was causing the hold up and the only time that happens is on tight winding lanes when I am cautious of oncoming traffic and conscious of stuff moving in the van on the corners - and there is rarely anywhere to pull over and let people pass on these type of roads.

In short can not remember doing it but would not rule it out.

What, and risk being stuck in a layby, unable to get out because of everyone speeding up to get in front of 'that caravan that's about to pull out', you must be joking. I don't set the speed limits, if they don't like slower moving caravans, they know who to complain to.

I wouldn't dream of pulling over !! I travel at traffic speed and thus do not hold up other vehicles.I would say that it is safer to travel with the prevailing traffic than to purposely stick to the caravan speed limit - 10mph less than indicated.

This way you don't get vehicles honking their horns, lights etc and overtaking just so they can get past a caravan and causing general irritation.

I doubt whether a Police office would give you a speeding ticket if you were travelling over the limit but not holding up traffic.

I pull over if/when I can if there is a significant queue behind me (4+). Its amazing how many times I am slowed down by slow moving cars. I generally have absolutely no way of overtaking them, then it appears to everyone else behind that I am the 'culprit' - most annoying! I normally try to get a move on, but the the 'cruise control' in the passenger seat can be a limiting factor!

I always pull over at the first decent opportunity as I hated being stuck behind a caravan in days gone by. I WILL NOT pull into some potholed layby however!

Regarding being held up by slower cars, which happens quite often, I make a point of pulling over as soon as possible to let those drivers behind see who the real culprit is!

ive never had the need to, all of my outfits have been matched so that i can maintain all the speed limits just as well as solo vehicles. very rarely do i slow down enough to cause problems on hills, its just a case of carefull and timely planing before the engine drops out of its power band.

The only place i stick to 50 on single carriage ways that are national limit is in devon and cornwall, you know that place that relies so heavily on tourism but has a police force hell bent on giving caravanners a hard time.

As for the times when you have a slower vehicle in front of you causing the hold up i just laugh when the idiot behind makes a stupid overtaking manouver only to find he / she needs to travel another 30 feet to get past the car they could not see, normally head on with a car comming the other way.

hi im a hgv driver and most wagons are governed to 56mph so when you pull out to overtake it can take a while, irish and foreign wagons tend to be faster.now my turn, when we pull over to allow cars, vans onto a motorway they increase their speed and leave you stranded in the middle lane, when we pull out to overtake slower vehicles they wait for you to get level then put the foot down why?

I have never pulled over as I have never had a big queue behind me. I have on the odd occaision had Miss Daisy driving along in front of me holding me up, this has lead to people passing me shaking their fists flicking me the V's then having a choronary when they see that they have to pass another vehicle.

I always pull over when it's safe to do so, it's just common courtesy but saying that it's not very often I have to do it. Yesterday, on a long straight stretch of road with nothing coming, a car came up behind me so I indicated and slowed down for it to overtake. I almost came to a stand before the girl overtook me. It was a total waste of time though because in 2 miles I caught her up with several other vehicles behind an Asda lorry where we all stayed for the next 10 miles until I arrived home.

If I do get stuck behind a slower vehicle I will still pull in if I can. Just because I'm not allowed to overtake them doesn't mean I have to act like an a$$ole and slow everyone else up.

From a few of the replies in this topic it's not surprising that most motorists think caravanners are shyte because if I had anything to do with it I wouldn't allow them to be in charge of a kids tricycle let alone a vehicle towing a caravan or even a crane ;O)
