Hi all

I am looking at changing my tow car in the next 12 months. So far, I keep coming back to a Vauxhall Insignia. I basically need something to pull my 1200kg 2 berth. I may change my van in the next couple of years too, so I want something that may pull upto 1400kg, so whatever car I get, I want to make it future proof.

My choice of an Insignia comes down to fuel economy when not towing and keeping road tax as low as possible. The insignia seems to tick these boxes, and I have been looking at the 2L 140 bhp model as I think the 160bhp may be more than I need, plus the 140bhp's seem to be more available than the 160's.

Anyway... just to confuse things, I have stumbled across the Hyundai i40, which seems similar to the insignia, but a smaller engine with similar power (134bhp). Has anyone towed with one? What are peoples thoughts?

I have not towed with the Hyundai, but looking at the future where you might go up to 1,400 kg I would say the power could be a problem for both that and the Insignia. From my experience of towing in those weight ranges I would be looking more at a 1600 bhp car. That extra 200 kg is an almost 20% increase in weight and will need more power to move it.

It depends on what Insignia you want, The 20 L Diesel 108 to 192 hp - torque from 190 to 300 lb- ft Petrol- 138 hp through to 325hp torque 148 to 320 lb-ft take your pick
Mine is a 163 hp estate diesel pulling 1235.kg at the moment, going to up rate to 1340 kg can only speak for my motor, pulling 1400, no problem bags of power. around 32 mpg towing. You don't say whether it's new or secondhand. Mines MY13 face lift the new MY18 , I Think. Different towing limits.
Except for the lower hps no need to worry, plenty of power.
Eco-flex 163 something like £50 tax , Mines £150.

PS I'd have thought 1600 hp was enough. :woohoo: :woohoo:

There was a Hyundai i40 Tourer used tow car feature in the November 2017 issue of Practical Caravan which you can get here. In addition, we tested one for our Tow Car Awards back in 2012, which you can read about here.

Hope that helps!
