thinking about changing our caravan to 2007 bailey senator series 6 t/a 6 berth and was wondering before purchasing. as i already have in mind to change the santa fe to kia sorento which car would pull this sort of van the best?

should i change to a sorento or keep the sf for my new van?

Hi

First you need to log onto WHATTOWCAR.com to see the tow weight of both. I looked around for months and pontificated for a while before settling on a new Santa Fe limited. Tows my Swift Accord 1450 kgs all up, no probs.

Both will be good tugs, both are made by the same company, but to my mind, the Kia is old technology, engine wise, compared to the Hyundai. The ride is also quite bouncy in the Kia, and if you look at all the blogs, the MPG is not as good as the Santa.

You have to test drive both however.

Gareth please bear in mind that the Sorrie is replaced by an all new model next year.

It will be based on the the SF so losing it's ladder chassis.

Since they already lose quite a bit of value I would reckon that it is better to wait 6 months. If this downturn continues dealers will be keener especially with old style models.
 
gareth, as you know i have the santa fe 2.2 cdx7 auto. we have the new bailey wyoiming with mptlm at 1678kg. it pulls it no probs if its a realloy steep hill we just put it into tiptronic and no probs.

two weeks ago we had the same feeling as you and deceided to go and test drive a manual kia 08 xt. its a more bouncier ride and i didnt like the manual. i got back in the santafe and said to craig if we change this it will be the biggest mistake of our lives.

we have cut down what we take as in clothes wise and check the mose weight everytime we leave with just the gas bottle in the front locker and only kids bedding under the front seats its always 80kg.

you would be mad to change. you dont get self levelling suspention, or lumbar seats, the clean air button silly things really. yes in the sorento on xt model you do get sunroof, rds, its tows more and better max tow bar weight.

i wouldnt change mate you would regret it.

we tow the wyoming at 89%.

have you tried chipping sodbury to see what deal they will do for you on the carolina?.

thanks to every one who replyed the reason i wanted to change was mostly the nose weight increase and the low range box the reason for a higher nose weight is because the stuff the miss's puts in the locker (she will kill me for this) e.g she has one just one suitcase full of thongs and the rest of her underwear. then about 5 more for other clothes i take one suit case for everything but we all no what women are like. the reason for a low range box is because the sf got stuck in 4wd on the muddy storage site and it was actually a kia what pulled us out but on the weekend the company who im getting van from has a kia with a towbar so i will take sf to see which tows best.

gareth, my craig was just the same with coats, trainers and polo shirts as well as shorts jeans and trousers. instead of chaging the car and costing us money we have cut down and im just doing more washing. there 4 of us and theres still empty cupboard space.

why dont you wait until you get the new van then pack the van 2 days before you go and see how you get on.

i hope you dont mind me asking. why do you take suitcases?. why dont you just take the clothes on hangers and in holdals then pack the van days before you go then there no need for heavy suitcases?.

hi jo-anne i will stick to sf then for now but what you say about suitcases(ask the miss's) lol she wont even travel to the supermarket with out one i reckon 🙂 but we arnt going away again this year but i thought the kia would tow better with the low range box after getting stuck with sf but never mind. should be getting van in october got to wait for it be built and delivery date will be october. the best

gareth, tell me the story of when you got stuck then?.

when we was away at the weekend we saw a new freelander towing a new wyoming and an oldish jag towing series 5 wyoming heavier than series 6. They both tow less than your santa fe and weight simular to your new van.

keep your money for now and just see how you get on with the santa fe. just tell the misses you will by her some new cheese wires i mean thongs, lol.

hi jo-anne well what it was we went to pick the old van up from a muddy storage and it was fine getting to the van but when we got the van on the back all 4 wheels spinning which is where low range would come in handy. ah about the misses i cant afford none now with new van coming lol so she will have to nick some from you lol. but anyway but defeninatly keeping sf for now as its not often i go offroading and we are going to keep new van at home having a garage built for it round the side of the house hows your sf cope off road then jo-anne

gareth, we to have a muddy storage in winter and our van is at the top on the hill. so when we come back we go round a corner down a bit and reverse up a hill. we always put in 4wd when wet or muddy at storage. no problems.

when we had that bad rain a couple of months ago the storage was really wet and when you drove over the grass the water would splash around the wheels like going through a ford again no probs.

just see how you get on if you aint happy then change but glad your gonna give it a go first.

we have self levelling sus on ours whether that makes a difference i dont know. maybe it would lutz may be able to answer that one.

ok thanks for comments just towed bailey with it no probs and its on muddy site now i didnt get stuck this time and your right mises wants some new cheese wires so i said ill ask if you have any spare as im skint now lmao!. 🙂. but any way take care mine hasnt got self leviling suspension how does it work with van on the back? .

gareth she wont get cheese wires off me they would cut me to bits. i have rather large ladies boxers, lol.

hi jo-anne lol ok on boxers lol but never mind i havent got it yet i meant i used the test one with the sf and it was perfect dealer let me take it storage to see if i got stuck and it was fine but now i know it will tow ok i am keeping the sf. thanks for your help

p.s are you going to the caravan show at the nec maybe we could meet up and have a chat.

gareth, im not going to the show. My dogs puppies are due that weekend so im afraid ill be delivering.

i really only go to the show if i need anything. i dont go and browse the vans because ive got the perfect one for us so i dont bother. what awning do you have for the carolina?.

what dealer did you use?.

ok jo-anne no probs ill venture over to the show just for a day out really but hope your dogs do well what kind is your dog i have 2 collies and are totally mental,

i havent got an awning yet but going to use towsure again like last time on old van the dealer i used was salop caravans in cosford no to far about 30 mins away from me not sure if you know cosford or how far you are from it but its a good dealer,

got brand new van plus delivery (as might be at work when its finished being built) for a total of
