hi all trying to to sort out my caravan in surance on a Elddis avatane840 supreme 2018 I used a comparison web site and had a quote for £146 now Ripe wont £300 plus so do caravan guard I am wondering if thid is to cheap and would like to know how much you normaly pay the company with the lowest qout is called Insure and My

You need one that has a good reputation for paying claims. Many reviews just cover the ease of buying the policy. CaravanGuard have a good record, so do CMHC and CCC. But they aren’t the cheapest. For the £146 I would read the T&C very closely and what is covered by the respective policies.

Last months PCv had a massive advert from the following who are part of Equine and Livestock Insurance promising a 45% premium reduction. No idea how good they are on premiums and claims so please judge for yourself

Hopefully you will never need to make a claim, in which case consider the cheapest, but the reality is when you do need to make a claim, usually the cheapest policies are the ones that put as many obstacles in your way and make it as difficult to the point where you wonder if it was worth it. So I wholeheartedly agree with Otherclives posting, becasue usually if you need to make a claim it's the time when you are most stressed, and you want the company to help not hinder you.

They get some low scores on Trust pilot and other reviews sites but not specific to caravans.

We always had our Elddis product a Buccaneer insured with Caravanguard and it was only for new so a premium of £146 I would be wondering why. Expect to pay about £300.

Coincidentally, I have just received a message from Which? (The Consumer associations publication)has been delivered to the FCA about the insurance industries behaviour, and failure in meeting not only regulatory requirements but also customer focused activities. The FCA has acknowledged receipt of the petition

The regular reports from The Financial Ombudsman Service are available on line , free.
It is their data that have triggered the campaign by Which 👍.
The real concern for me are the number of rejected claims that have NOT been referred to the FOS. Sadly many vulnerable people take their Insurers repudiation as the final word😢
The trend over the last few years of rejecting valid claims is disgraceful and hopefully will be reversed by the Which? Campaign.

Another vote for CaravanGuard, UK based in Yorkshire, straightforward wording not cheapest but we pay around 300 a year. Spoke to them yesterday regarding my cracked Swift panoramic window, just in case I need to claim, in the last resort, phone answered by a human being on Saturday afternoon answered all my questions, said certainly covered so reassuring to know I have them as back up, current quote is over 2 grand, so I would need to pay the 250 excess., not bad for a premium of less than a pound a day

I can remember a few years back when someone insured their motor for £20000 and paid the premium. A short while later the car was written off and they were offered the market value of about £15000.
The argument was that they had insured it for £20000 and the insurer company had accepted and agreed to a contract for that amount and that is what the insurance company should pay. I think it went as far as court before the insurance company paid up.
Our current car is insured for almost as much as I paid for it so the insurance premium was not cheap. When doing a a valuation it seems the insurance company do not take into account VAT that you will need to pay on the replacement car. Hopefully I will never have to make a claim for a loss.

Two things B.
1. All private issued policies must include VAT unless the Insured is VAT registered.
2. Whilst a lot of Insurers will ask for your valuation ,deep within the policy wording may be a clause that says claims will be settled on a market value basis and that “used “ parts may be used during the repair !

You can insist on the repair being done by the brand dealership especially if you can show a full service history with the brand dealership. Although it may happen, I doubt if any insurer would use second hand parts as they could leave them wide open to later claims i.e. engine failure.
Some policies, like classic cars, are agreed valuation - but most policies for cars and caravans are market valuation - the proposal valuation is used to determine the premium but also act as a top limit in the case of under-valuing.
If a caravan is worth £15,000 then insuring it for £20,00 will only get £15,000 if it's written off or stolen. Conversely if the proposal stated £10,000 to get the premium down then the insurer would only pay out £10,000 rather than the value.

Our car insurer allows a repair to be carried out by a repairer of our choice but limits the finance to what the cost would be via their own recommended repairer. These days body repairs really require specialist repair companies. When our Rio was rear ended whilst parked the lady’s insurer took charge and it went to a Kia approved body shop 14 miles from us. The repair was excellent. Our Kia main dealer would have been hard pressed to equal it. In fact I’m not sure if they even have a body shop.
I think that very few franchised dealers have their own bodyshops these days - although some of the big dealer groups which have many different branded dealers may have a central bodyshops for all brands.
When my Touareg was damaged by a truck, I used VW's claim handler to progress the claim but the repair was done by an independent bodyshop, using genuine, new parts.

It’s all about what you agree with your Insurer and precisely what the accepted policy wording says.
Caravans should be simple. CAMC covered mine for the full like for like new replacement value until it was 10 years old . Thereafter market value applies.
As I discovered a long time ago “Bodyshop” garages are a totally different skill set to the ordinary mechanical repairer. Anyone remember the old Churchill Jigs for straightening bent chassis and bodies😉

Glasses Guide for caravans and motor homes ceased to be on the 1st January 2025.
Best carefully study all the dealer adverts and private for sale ads and for the pricing variation
Some people over-value their car/caravan expecting to make a profit if it's written off or stolen - but that doesn't work.
