Isle of Skye

We are thinking of Skye for next year,coming up from Wales,all advice and suggestions very welcome.First thoughts are up to 10 days on Skye and maybe leave van on site for a few days and BB Lewis from Uig with just the car to cut costs. All help re routes and sites gratefully received,many thanks Denis.

I'm currently planning a similar trip but will take the caravan to Harris and the Uists.

The Western Isles ferries from Uig will use RET (Road Equivalent Tariff) next year which will reduce rates for cars - it's not yet clear how caravan rates will be affected.

There's only one sensible route, in my opinion - M6, M74, M8, A82, A87 - some find the A82 daunting along the northern half of Loch Lomond but I've never had a problem there.

I would say avoid the northern half of the A82 if you have a twin axle caravan. We had a very close encounter with a coach on a bend on a narrow stretch, we actually thought we had done serious damage to our 'van, the wing mirrors on the coach just caught our awning rail, no damage, just a black mark!! Phew!!

hello to Roger, and Denis, great minds think alike, i was just about to post a topic of going over to the hebrides, we are going over next year, not looked into too much detail other than know the ferry company, as i contacted them regarding the dogs, and if we were able to take them on deck, apparently we can, have you been before, or what sites are you looking at, weve been as far as fort william with the van on the back, and then drove upto skye for the day, we aim to take our time getting there because of the dogs, we stayed at bunree (cc) site and it was very pleasent,would do so again, thankyou for reading, also would appreciate any advice. regards ED

Ed - Fort William is the gateway to the Highlands as far as I'm concerned - it just gets better and better the further north you go. Shetlands are the only Scottish islands we've done, well worth the expensive ferry for wildlife watchers.

CC Morvich is visually unappealing, just like a carpark, but the surrounding mountains are stunning. It's a convenient stop-over for the Uig ferries though.

Denis, it is virtually impossible to get to Skye without touching the A82 at some point unless you take a lengthy detour north. We live in the north of the A82 and have a twin axel van. Wendy, I am sorry that you had a nasty incident but I think it was probably caused by bad driving on the part of the coach driver. The A82 is a busy road especially in the tourist season but the worst part by far is by Loch Lomond side (the south A82). However, my husband takes our van by that route without any worries.
