Hi there, we are looking at a trip to the Isle of Wight, most probably be over the summer school holidays. I am looking for any comments and site suggestions anyone may have and their general experience. I will be travelling down from North East england so any travel suggestions, over night stops and ferry route would be appreciated. we are looking for a nice site with good shower/toilet facilities, we are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids aged 6 & 7. we are not party animals and looking for a quiet (ish) site, certainly not the 10 pints and a punch up type! look forward to your comments! Cheers! Andrew

We've only ever done day and weekend trips to the IOW to see friends who live there and when sailing, it's not somewhere I would like to do a week or mores holiday at. But if you have a family and the weather is nice there are some nice beaches.

Book your ferry well in advance and do not miss it in summer as they can be fully booked.

The water between the mainland and the IOW is described locally as the most expensive in the world as the ferry charges are so high. Expect to pay more than for a trip to Europe via Dover!

Andrew,

We travel from Teesside to Brighton and have stopped at Ferry Meadows (page 50 in the Caravan Club book ) but prefer Houghton Mill ( page 49 ) Both are handy for the A1 Ferry Meadows being closer but Houghton Mill is more picturesque and has a lovely walk through fields beside the river.

We travelled a couple of years ago down from Hull, East Yorkshire. We travelled down during the day (4 hours) and stayed a couple of nights at a CL just outside Oxford. We then travelled down after breakfast for our ferry crossing (about 2 1/2 hours). Found it very relaxing this way and we did the same coming home, but stayed at a CL near Northampton. We just didn't fancy the long journey with the kids down to the ferry in one go.

Andrew, there is a brand new site just about to open on the Island.

It is called Whitefield Forest, Brading Road, Ryde.

From what I have seen so far it looks very impressive, but I have no idea of prices yet.

It is located just on the outskirts of Ryde, which has a great beach, good shops and eating places, and is only a short distance from Sandown and Shanklin, both well known tourist places, with good beaches etc.

I am actually going to this site on 20 &21 April so will update via this forum when I come back.
