I decided to up-size the gas bottle to the 13Kg, It just fits nicely in the front locker. Couldn't believe the savings afforded by this move. The down side? Presently I have the upper body strength to twist and shuffle this monster in the locker, later on however, that'll be out.
Mean time, has anyone else gone for the 13Kg bottle instead of the 6Kg + 6Kg. How's it going?

I gave up 6x6 in UK as it’s easy to work out when it’s about time to change. But abroad we took two 6kg. One for cooker and the other external for bbq. But now we have a CADAC the bbq runs on Campingaz so they are readily available in UK and Europe.

I made a slight modification to the gas locker on my caravan, I can fit two 6kg's or one13kg calor.

2 x 6kg calor lite (12kg) was £54.00
1 13kg Calor was £29.00

I now use only 13kg size but have 2 full 6kg calor lites as spares (at least for the the time being).

I will stick to 13kg as it makes economic sense.

Calors website is quoteing £35.50 for a 13 kg. And £23.45 for a 6kg, a saving of £1.17 a kg of gas. , it is a saving , but I have problems with not enough payload in the van as it is. So humping around another 24 kg of metal as opposed to one lite bottle.. I will stick to the 6kg ones.

After reading this thread I thought, I would drive upto my local Calor gas main dealer in Bedford, and exchange my empty lite for a new one, they always had loads of them, it turns out they closed last November. So my nearest main dealer will be Oxford a 2 hour round trip. Oh well , thats one of the lites getting replaced by a heavy, from the man in the village. Oh and no news about the new lites, a pipe dream .

For anyone contemplating using a different sized bottle to teh space provided, do bear in mind that it is a legal requirement for a vapour takeoff gas bottle(s) as used in caravans, to be secured in the upright position, and that proper ventilation both at high and low level must be retained to prevent the entrapment of any gas fumes that make leak from teh bottles or connecting pipes etc.

I see Calor no longer detail Calorlite on their website. So I rang them and a lite refill is £26.45. Whereas a standard 6kg is £23.45. Yesterday my services deakercharged £32. Ugh

Interesting weight comparison as a full standard 6kg propane weighs gross weight between 15-17 kg.

And a full 23kg, calor can be 25 kg to 35 kg. And empty. 12.7 to 21.9 kg.

I think you mean that a full 13 kg propane can be 23-35kg gross weight.

Hutch,

Is the Milton Keynes Go-Outdoors branch any nearer to you than the Oxford gas dealer, with the go-outdoors discount card (£5.00 per annum - not always worth it I know) there is a bit of a saving to be had on Calor gas.

My neighbour, whose brother runs the village Calor outlet, never buys his Calor gas. He checks with his brother for bottles that have just a little bit left in them, 6kg ones. And says its surprising how long that little bit left will run for, over a week at a time. So he carries two bottles, one the almost empty and one about 1/4 full. The fuller one has been on the go for almost 4 years he reckons.

IAs we go to Spain most years I use CEPSA 12kg and one fits front locker of the various caravans I have had quite easily. It’butane but this is not a problem except in freezing conditions.
The exchange price this year was just less than 17 euro so a real deal relative to Calor. A full cylinder each Sping easily lasts the 3+ months in Spain and 2 months in France in Autumn.
The gross weight full is around 20kg and I check from time to time using airline baggage hand scale check with one or two 8 litre plastic njerry cans of water.

That's interesting... I'm still on my first 6KG of Propane (Used a Campingaz 907 prior to last year) and I was convinced the bottle would run out in January as I was using the hob and oven all week; I may just keep using whats left rather than preemptively replacing it.

To put some figures and proportion to it:

LPG is sold by weight which is a good way because that negates any effects of temperature or pressure. For the same reason, the energy in the fuel (Calorific value) is proportional to weight.

LPG contains approx 11950 kcal per kg.

that gives about 13.9 kWh of energy.

Each burners on a caravan cooker is typically rated at about 1.5Kw @ full power,
(https://www.elyboatchandlers.com/lpg-hobs/spinflo-series-8-stainless-steel-lpg-hob)

But most frequently they are turned down or just used for short periods, The oven once up to temperature turns its flame down to match the heat losses so it keeps a relatively even temperature. All things considered you would have to be doing a lot of cooking to use more than 2kWh's worth of gas and I suspect in practice it will be less than 1Kwh .

That means you can cook at least 14 meals and only use about 1kg of gas.

Thats a 143% price hike for buying gas in small bottles.

Here's my figures:
13Kg bottle = £35.50, 6kg bottle =£23.45
Therefore: Large bottle = £2.73 per Kg Gas, Small bottle = £3.91 per Kg Gas
1 x 13Kg Bottle gives 13Kg gas, 2 x 6Kg bottle gives only 12kg gas
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 6kg bottles cost £50.81 for 13Kg of gas.

Lite usage may be 1 x 13Kg per year. This gives a saving of £15.31 / year (£153.10 in ten years).
Heavier usage @ 2 x 13Kg per year. This gives a saving of double the above.

At £15 per year it’s about one night on a CL! I’d rather carry less noseweight, increase the payload and easily save £15 or more by fuel saving measures that make no difference to journey time. Also having a 13 kg bottle that could weigh 35kg gross weight doesn't appeal. That combined with battery and mover could virtually wipe out any useful caravan payload.

I have a deal with my pal in France, who owns a campsite. Whilst there I use French Butagas, 13kg, which I buy for €27 (last year). I also keep two 6kg Calor,on the van but only use them when I'm not on his site. One 13kg last me over two seasons, usually about six weeks on Butagas and 20 weeks on Calor. Needless to say, I don't carry the 13kg with me: it is only used on one site, which has the advantage of being available whichever van I use..
BTW, I only paid £21.00 for my 6kgs.

I with you OC. Just bought lunch for me and the wife, £100.50 taxi both ways £15 so I will stick to the 6 KG ones. Not so heavy, need the payload for the wine and beer. But each to their own. Also a full 13kg bottle at maybe 35 kg. A lot of weight on the floor.

.......there is no point having a 13kgs Calor if you caravan with EHU.

The larger size is useful if you often go off grid and use a lot more gas.
.....if you rally or go to events where this is the case the pitch fees are usually considerably cheaper.
The savings for having no EHU can buy a lot of gas.
The cylinders are heavy and have to be secured properly and upright....my caravan is modified to carry the cylinder centrally over the A frame in the front locker....not all lockers are big enough to take the upright cylinder.
Calor won't just give you a 13kg cylinder either....you have to take out a rental agreement for the bigger size.
I have 2 x 13's and 2 x 6's in stock......I carry one 13 if going off grid and one 6 if on EHU.

Going to a 4 night event at the end of May......no EHU but there are toilets, showers, bars, food stalls and entertainment .
The large site is in a nice area ....£53 all in for Thursday midday to Monday midday.
I shall be taking a 13kgs cylinder
