Thinking of changing my Sorento to a large family estate as i've had enough of the running costs and want something with a thats more fun to drive without the van!

I'm thinking of either a Jag x-type estate 2.2d or a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi estate and it would be great if anyone can give their opinions on them.

My dad has towed with 2.0d X type saloon and a 2.2d x type saloon. Both towed well though the 2.2 obvioulsy had the edge - he was towing between 1400 and 1500Kg. He now has an XF 2.7d which is out of this world according to him! (I prefer my Skoda!)

Hi Chris

I have the mondeo 2.2 estate Towing an Eccles at 1500kg, I have done 90000 miles in two and a half years(probably about 9000 towing) and it is still going strong, I have had to have the tubo refurbished but had no problems other than this. If you go for the mondeo make sure you the self levelling rear suspension, this helps no end.,

Hope this helps

I tow with a 2005 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI Estate which I bought new. Great solo (Up to 60 mpg on the motorway) and over 30 mpg with a 1500kg Bessacarr behind. Covered 4000 miles going to Spain without a problem. Awesome load carrying capacity. Totally reliable with regular servicing. The 2.2 engine is the one to get for the extra power which makes towing in 6th gear easier. But I agree with Alb - the self leveling suspension is the one to have. Standard on Ghia and above when I bought mine. If only they did a 4x4 version! The Jag. has less space both for people and luggage, but you're probably aware that they share the same Mondeo chassis and mechanicals.

Interesting enquiry as I have a 2.2 diesel Jag x Type estate and am thinking of changing to the new Mondeo 2.2 diesel estate or hatch. I tow an Abbey Vogue 495 which as a MLTPM or whatever it is of about 1475kg. My Jag is about 1550kg so it's a bit close to 100% but tows fine. I have the 6 speed manual box and don't get into 6th much- only on flat or downsloping motorways.

Whilst it is correct that the X type is based on a Mondeo floorpan, it is the Mark 1 pan which is very old - hence the 75kg noseweight limit copmpared to the new Mondeo 95kg.

The X type is a lovely car with and withought the van and runs smoothly and quiet. I get about 40mpg average without the van and 27-28 with the van.

go for the jaguar after all the leaping cat is a classier badge than the dowdy blue oval. Plus the jag looks better and will generally have mor equipment

Chris

from your two choices, i would take the 2.2 jag estate.

I still think the extra cc make the difference in real world driving.

I have a 2.2d X-type estate & its a great all round family car & a good tow car. The floor pan is based on a shortened Mk3 Mondeo platform so there is less space inside than a mondeo. There is no comparison once behind the wheel though - i've driven many Mondeo's & non has the feel of the Jag. I tow a 1483kg van & its very sure footed & stable. Never get into 6th gear as 5th is perfect at 60mph & more economical than 6th at that speed unless going downhill. I get 29 mpg towing & upto 50 solo on a gentle motorway run. Go for SE or Sport Premium spec & you get climate, heated screen & seats, touch screen sat nav, voice, bluetooth phone, Zenon lights, multi CD & electric everything. Mines 4 years old with 40k miles & has been very reliable. Max tow weight is 1500kg & max nose weight is 75kg. Hope this helps.
