Kerb side weights

I apologise first off if this has already been discussed, but am unable to find any reference.

We tow with an 06 Mazda 6 automatic. Great tow car with our Swift Charisma 220.

Maximimum gross weight (ok so I am old fashioned about terminology) of the caravan is 1150kl. The hand book for the Mazda says it is capable of towing up to 1500 kls on a breaked trailer. But no where in the handbook, and I have been through it from start to finish, does it tell me what the kerbside weight of the car is.

I am a stickler about the 85% rule. We are thinking about a replacement van and whereas I can find out what the MGW of caravans are - how do I do a calculation for 85%.

Other than go onto a weigh bridge, can anyone please suggest how to find out the kerbside weight of my Mazda 6.

Looking forward to your comments.

Linda, according to the what tow car site, your Mazda weighs in at 1395kg kerbweight.

Linda,

I agree that the weighbridge is the way to go.

Make sure your vehicle is fuelled but does not contain any of the usual clutter that many of us tend to carry around.

Put it on the weighbridge with driver OR add 75Kg to the weight without driver (cant remember where I read that). Once you have the kerb weight its easy to work out 85%.

Also ...... it is an 85% GUIDELINE not rule. A sensible one though.

Although the 85% figure may be a sensible starting point, I can't quite see why one should treat it as written in stone. I'm running at around 98% at the moment and had a blow out on the motorway last week, but no sign of instability because of the incident. The only thing that told me that something was wrong was the big bang, followed by smoke billowing out of the wheel arch.

Recent cars, including 06 registrations should have the "mass in running order" printed on the V5 registration document. This is equivalent to the EC definition of kerbweight - which will be used in the revised Towing Code when it's published.
