Am about to embark upon the purchase of a second hand 05 LE(???) deisel from a Kia dealer ( peterborough). Just can't get my head around a manual or automatic. Any suggestions ?

Also how much could / should i build into the package for a twin electrics tow bar ...£400 ?

any advice is welcome

Hi Neil

Father in Law towed with his Sedona for 18 months, effortlessly.

Personally I prefer towing with a manual as I feel I have more control particularly on long decents or climbs. He had no problems with his Sedona but a few people on this forum have had glitches that have caused them some grief. I think the dealers let them down rather than the Sedonna per se. All round it is good value for money but do read some of the other threads on this vehicle.

Hi, i had a 03 plate 2.9 CDRi SE Manual. Towed like a dream. I'd been told the auto did ALOT of changing up & down when towing. Manual ALOT better for towing. BUT the Manual gearchange is DREADFUL for everyday use. Very notchy & hard work. Also Very big car for every day use. I changed mine in December for a New Kia Carens 2.0 CRDi. It has a kerb weight of over 1650kg and a max tow of 1500kg plus the manual box is a dream. All in all, i wouldn't say the Sedona was a bad car, but i always wished i'd bought something else. I only had it for 5 months, and that was enough, also 30 mpg max solo or towing.

Neil,

Currently on our second sedona (both manual) and really pleased with them both. When we first purchased we were steered clear of the automatic by the salesman who informed us that they wear the brakepads for fun - in some cases new front pads after only 6,000 miles. Also I think I found somewhere that the automatic is in the next emmisions category up so consequently higher road tax - it may even be in the category that our loveable government are thinking of increasing to ridiculous levels (+

I have always preferred manual for any car on the grounds of 'I'm in charge '. Main problem I have found with the Sedona is the poor turning circle and it is rather heavy on the front tyres - 20k - miles but not on the rear ones. Other than that great for towing and bags of space for awning etc.

the sedona is great if you have a heavy van to pull,I have had two since 03 and towed vans of up to 1900Kgs and now have a Rallye 644 that weighs in at 1900Kgs,most other Mpvs are too light for the job and a 4x4 in general are too expensive to run,I get 42mpg solo and nearly 30mpg towing and if you remove the rear two seats the storage space is amazing.But saying that,it is a big old bus and it is cheap compared to just about any other large Mpv.

DONE IT ! bought a second hand Sedona SE Jan 05 deisel manual,chopped in the Rover 75 diesel as part exchange, need a towbar now best price so far is

I've had an 06 LX 2.9D AUTO from new, now 11,000 miles.

Just for the record it's a dream to tow with auto, I'm pulling 1800KG.

Even better if you can get a Cruise control.

I've had over 41 mpg on a run not towing and around 30 towing carefully.

The 2.9d auto is the highest tax class which is a travesty; I know motor bikes which do less MPG.

No probs with wearing out brakes and no evidence of wearing out tyres, although they do fit budget from new.

Agree that the turning circle is poor.

I fitted a Towsure fixed towbar and twin elecs myself, I can't remember the cost but just checked the prices online and it looks like all bits inclusive of everything from Towsure is less than

Hi

You'll be pleased with the Sedona as a towing vehicle - it's a big old bird and doesn't seem to mind what's behind it.

We bought ours before we contemplated caravanning and we opted for the auto, which is great for effortless driving but now we're towing, I would've preferred the manual. The auto wants to change down too often and if you're not really careful, your mpg can be shot to bits.

As for wearing out brake pads - ours has done 23,000 and still going strong.

One question I do have - what's the official noseweight figure for this bus? I've read somewhere that it's 85kg-ish. Any clarification would help.

Neil, We are currently towing with the Sedona '05 registration; you could tow up the side of the house in 4th. However, because I cannot get to grips with the new Sedona which does not have a handbrake, we are going for the Nissan X-trail, at least IT has a hand brake. We have Motability vehicles as hubby is disabled so change every three years.

Ours is a manual and I must say the dealership, Pentons, near Christchurch, Dorset, have been great.
