I currrently tow with a Kia Sportage which is great - no complaints. However, I do quite high mileage to my place of work and the miles are mounting up on my car.

To help prolong the life of my Sportage, my Mum has offered to have a tow bar fitted to her 53 Sedona which will mean that she can also drive when she comes away with us and will hopefully, make my Sportage last longer.

However, the Sedona is fitted with reversing sensors. Does anybody else have reversing sensors fitted with a tow bar and, if so, does the tow bar affect it in any way? Would a detachable tow bar be the answer (obviously, it might bleep lots when reversing with the van on, but then again, you sort of realise there is something behind you then!).

We have now found ourselves with a new hobby of 'tow bar/reverse sensor' spotting!!!

Thanks, Karina

When we had a sedona we got a detachable tow bar fitted so it didn't make the reversing sensors go off when driving solo.

I have a c4 Picasso with sensors. I was advised to have a 'dedicated wiring kit' fitted. This is a piece of kit that is made specifically for the particular model of car. This stops the sensors beeping when the 'van is attached. It also tells the electronic gizmos in the car (for abs and stability control etc) that there is 1.5 tonnes hanging on the back!!!

i have a detachable tow bar on my Mercedes AMG I remove it when solo so not a problem when towing and reversing they do not activate.
But if they did then I have a button on the dashboard to deactivate them and they would reactivate the next time I turn on the ignitiion.
However the best way I think I can answer your specific question is that the distance between the actual bumper of the car and the front panel of the caravan falls outside the sensor range and therefore does not activate it.

this also seems to be the case when turning whilst reversing as it did not go off when I reversed

I hope this helps

John
