I'm considering buying a new Kia Sorento 2.5 XE and wondered what people's thoughts were on the day to day to running costs?

What have you been charged for a service? What sort of mpg do you get when solo and towing?

Martin Before you take the plunge for a Sorento, I would suggest that you check out the Kia Uk forum, as the fuel consuption figures given are far from the average. There are a few members of this forum that can get nowhere near these figure no matter how they drive. My Figures are Best 33mpg solo. Worst 25 mpg solo

Best towing a Swift Challenger 530 ( not the largest van around ) 27mpg. Worst towing 18mpg and Mine are far from being the worstfigures recorded.

What Steve says is true, Martin. Like Andrew says also, it depends on how you drive. It also depends on you're local area, where driving up hill and down dale may effect consumption too. The only way of getting guidance is to look at the Govt fuel figures and compare these against similar cars, like for like. Still not very accurate, but with so many variables there is little else to do. For the record, we get about 30mpg solo and 25mpg towing a twin axle, but here again the journeys are different, long motorway/dual carriageway trips when towing, town/fast A roads when solo.

The Sorento is a great car and at that price you can't loose.

Lol. Ihave to agree with you, the Sorento is the best tow car I have ever used and wuold recomend it to anyone despite the poor fuel figures. I can't wait for the new model with a vgt turbo to come out, hoping that it will improve the fuel consumtion.

I have to agree with Steve W, my average fuel consumption since buying new Sorrie March 2004 is 23 mpg. This is total use 17000 miles of which towing was 5000 miles. The vans a big twin axle 1600Kg.

The new Sorrie's have a bit more torque but does this account for the massive improvement on fuel consumption? I dont think so.

That said, it's a brilliant tow car. As Steve says do have a look at Kia UK Forum

I bought my Sorento XS Auto in Oct last year and have covered around 4,500 mile so far. I mainly use it for towing our Bailey Senator Oklahoma (1440 kg) which it does well. However, the fule consumption is WAY OFF the published figures. I drive carefully; setting the cruise to 56 mph when on motorway, and we just sit in the inside lane calmly. However on our recent journey to / from Norfolk down to our home in Kent, I was diassapointed to note that my consumption was 22mpg.

As a tow car, the Sorento is great, but I do dislike its 'bag of nails' engine noise which is not even compensated by great mpg.

Thanks again for all of your comments. Having checked owners comments on the various forums concerning fuel consumption and also repsonses they have received from Kia customer services, I have decided to leave the Sorento for the time being.

I'll keep an eye out as to whether the face lifted model due for release this summer will offer any improvement.

Sorry to see you are not considering the Sorento. We have had ours for two years with no probs. Tows like a dream. The fuel consumption is not that good and nowhere near Kia estimates but you do have 2 tons of vehicle with a proper chassis that will tow almost any caravan you might buy.

I reckon to get 28 normal use and around 23 towing.

I know of nobody who gets 35 unless they travel at 20 mph everywhere.
