Kia Sorento Tyres

Took our Kia into the garage because the front offside tyre's inside edge had worn away that much, the metal was showing through. The garage thought the tracking must have been out, but after checking this the tracking was spot on. The pressure has been alright aswell. Puzzled because the mechanic said nothing else would have caused this! I wonder if anyone can offer similar experiences or probable causes for this mystery.

Hi Gail

Firstly take your car to a diffrent garage and if you feel that the first garages assesment of the tracking was okay get them to check the suspension for bent arms, links or misaligned shock absorbers.

It sounds to me that you may have either kerbed a wheel, hit a large pothole or just may have some part of the suspension loose or misaligned.

Just checking the tracking is like buying a build-in fridge based on only one measurement - say the width - and expecting it to fit when you haven't checked the height and depth too.

The garage should have performed a full geometry check, which as x11 says, may have been damaged or incorrectly aligned from new.

The exact same thing happened to me this week. Sorento failed MOT due to very badly worn inside edge on front offside. Haven't kerbed it driven heavily over pothole etc.Will certainly get it checked out for potential problems shown in earlier post.

Hmm, very strange this! I've had my Sorento from new (04) and all four tyres wore down evenly and at the same rate after 33,000 miles.

I am now on 48,000 and was shocked the other day to notice...you guessed it... the inside edge of the front offside tyre wearing much faster than the rest of the rubber. The nearside front is OK.

If anyone can work out this phenomenon, please let us all know.

Hi Gail

This problem has been well aired and resolved by other Sorie owners . Have a look at uksorento.com. Search tyre wear and you will see the article which explains that apart from the tracking the castor angles are also crucial.

Personally my 05 Sorie did 40k on the originals and the BF Goodrich All terrains at 18k still look like new.

Much appreciated for all your replies, lots of helpful information. Took this info to the garage for it's 50,000 miles service, the mechanic was sympathetic and checked everything out, guess what? Nothing wrong! The garage are as puzzled as we are and have said that anytime we are driving past (this happens regularly) we can pop in and they will check things out for us. Very helpful but the mystery still exists.

Does your garage have the specialised equipment to test / measure castor angles etc?

There are specialised tyre dealers who I think do this eg Protyre in Gloucester. Must be others around the country.

I have also the same problem as wear on the inside of the front tyres. Unfortunatly I'm having problems viewing both sorento forums. does any one have any info on the castor angles. My wife works in a garage I just need a bit more info.
