I don't know about either Sportage or iX35 as far as towing goes - they both have a choice of 1.7 or 2.0 diesel.
If you want/need a 2.2 diesel you'll need to go up to the Kia Sorento / Hyundai Santa Fe - damn fine engine that is as well.

The ix35 2 diesel has 134ps, and only average economy.
I wasn't impressed with the spec.

Average, compared to what?
The 2.0CRDi 134bhp 4wd manual gives 49.6mpg on the official Combined cycle - an XTrail gives 44.1mpg.

The 2L BMW X3 gives around 183bhp, with around 280 pound feet, and 50mpg.
And weighs some 300kg more.
The 171 bhp xtrail my old 2009 car gives 44.8 mpg, with 266 pound feet.
From a car that's heavier that a xi35.

BMW economy is impressive across the models - but that's best, not average.

Its 2 or 4 wheel , as with most of these vehicle types, only the 150 2 wd, stats are available at present, SO i expect the extra weight of the 4wd to obviously reduce the economy, but I'm still expecting mid 50's mpg.
And best in class co2 emission's.
