Good evening, I would really appreciate if anyone who has towed with either a kuga 1.5 ecoboost or 1.5 tdci could give me some feedback on how they tow.
Many thanks

I use the 1.5 eco boost, with a coachman Olympia mtplm 1575kg. It is short on power and can struggle at times, I only get 20mpg. Previously I had a 2.0l Deisel. 160. I now wish I had stayed with the Deisel as it was much better for towing, I was getting 25mpg. I would go for the Deisel, but the 2.0l.

I had a similar problem with a 2.0 non turbo petrol Forester. Fine solo but struggled towing 1300 kg so I reluctantly bought another diesel car.
What's the 1.5 Ecoboost like solo driving. Our daughter has just bought a Focus 1.0 so I guess the 1.5 must zip along.

I can only compare it with the 2.0l Deisel. It drives ok solo but the mpg is still poor about 28mpg. The big difference I notice is the engine sounds like a whine rather than power.

Thanks, that's not good mpg solo, I had Saab 9000 CSE turbo that did better than that, so technology hasn't moved us on much has it? My 2.0 VAG diesel does more than that towing, and on a recent run up the A9 from Newtonmore to Inverness (solo) showed 58mpg on the dashboard display, although to be fair the whole route is covered by average speed cameras, and HGVs are restricted to 50mph so you spend quite some time following the HGVs, but you can then take in the splendid scenery.

In general a 1.5 engine is never going to do more than struggle except for very lightweight caravans. It would help people if they knew what you intend to tow and its MTPLM.

You cannot judge the ability of an engine on it'st cubic capacity alone. Its the power and torque characteristics that will determine its ability.

There are 3 different 1.5 Ecoboost engines available on the Kuga, 120ps,150ps and the 182ps automatic. Each one has different characteristics & towing limits (1800,2000 & 1850kg)
The 1.5 diesel has 120ps but a towing limit of 1200kg.
Hope this helps

Where do you think the power and torque come from?Basically what your saying is size has no bearing on engine output.Absolute cobblers, please read what forum members are posting, read Mottys blogs.Take a good look at Renaults statement on their R9m engine.

I've towed with a 1.6L NA petrol, one with 85bhp a carina2, the other a 90bhp cavalier, both with torque under 130 pound feet.

Its surprising what you can tow with a small engine. Stick a turbo on it and it will pull very well.
I towed a 1333kg caravan with an Audi 1.8T petrol with out effort

My Brother has had 3 Kugas all auto. First one a 163 bhp Diesel was fine. Second one a 1.5 turbo petrol with 182 bhp, he only had it a couple of months because of its poor Fuel consumption of 30 mpg and only 16 mpg whilst Towing!!! It had to go back to Ford, Who changed it for him for a 2ltr 180 bhp Diesel which he is now happy with. His caravan weight was around 1500kg.

Surely this topic was debated to death on a previous thread that started when the Goverment announced the "death" of the internal combustion engine by 2040! A small engine with turbo can produce power and torque akin to a larger naturally aspirated engine. It's not always down to size. Look at the performance of the 2.0 Tsi Audi in recent tie car tests.

On page two you will see a table that sets out the Cubic Capacity of these engines and their respective power outputs

The 1800cc model produces 45 bhp at the flywheel, By means of a comparison the old BMC A series engine of 803cc was available with a power output of between 28 and 94bhp Smaller CC yet more power in some versions

VAG, make extensive use of a a nominal 2.0L diesel engine block. It is available with power outputs from 90bhp to over 180bhp - Same swept volume

This shows you cannot determine the towing capability of a vehicle simply by looking at its Cubic Capacity, you have to also look at the power and torque curves.

If you have two engine options, one small cc and one larger cc and provided the power and torque curves and the gear boxes are comparable, both will tow equally well.

Thats correct otherclive it has been well covered to say the least,so i cant see why JL has to constantly remind people of his beliefs.
Ive copied the above as its quite a good example regards the 1.5 turbo petrol, mirrors Mottys road test results too.

It would be helpful if at least the information you post was correct. The 2litre VAG lowest output is 140hp,but leaving that aside and not being padantic the engines sizing is already of 2 litres.Quite a common and average size for a passenger car diesel engine.
Then to add to your debate, have you driven the higher output version of the engine?
I have, to be precise the twin turbocharged version of the engine installed in the latest Crafter.Very poor with a huge dip were the second turbo takes over. Now the Amarok comes available with the 3litre tdi engine.
