I am new to caravanning and purchased a caravan a few weeks ago. I purchased a Bailey Pageant Champagne. My towcar is a Toyota Avensis Estate 2.2 diesel. The caravan dealer stated the caravan was ok with my car but to watch what weight I put in it as the payload is 201kg and I would have to reduce this to 166kg.

I towed the caravan to York and weighed everything I put in the van. The payload was only 91kg. I am a bit uneasy about this weighing everything and I am considering purchasing a Land rover 2003 2 litre diesel. Will this be a better tow car?

Any advise would be appreciated as I am a bit confused when people refer to kerbweight etc and I cannot find these in the specification for my car.

steve,

Have you done a search on this site from freelander, i think there has been quite a bit of discussion.

I have a 01 td4 and tow a sterling sapphire 1450kg no problems at all.

The Freelander is proven to be 1 of the most unreliable car's you can buy. The latest 2008 model is very much better but still to be proven.

Look at a Honda CR-V 2.2 Diesel or Totota/Nissan.

Please please please do not buy a freelander - i'ts the worst car I've ever owned and has apent more time in various garage's than it's been on the road!

Buy an Xtrail or Sorrento if you feel you need a 4x4

Thank you for your advice but I purchased a Freelander last Monday evening. An 03 Freelander 2 litre diesel, 38,000 miles and in excellent condition. I only need it for 12 months until my company car is ready for renewing and yes I will then purchase a Honda. I negotiated a 12 month warranty at the garage so this will hopefully cover everything.
