Leg length problem

We may be looking for a replacement towcar (note I did not say new) sometime in the near future to tow our Pajeant Majstic.

We currently use an Octavia 1.9TDi SE 130 which, believe it or not, is sometimes a little too powerful. Torquey as it is it is almost impossible to use 6th except on a downward slope! On the other hand my Co. car, an Astra Estate 1.7CDTi 80bhp (which is about 87% with the Majestic) towed the van everywhere albeit somewhat slowly at first. It does better mpg too.

The problem we have is that I am 6ft 1in and - shall we say - not narrow of girth, and my wife is 5ft 8in. As you may rightly surmise we both have fairly long legs and find that the seat cushion of most modern cars is too short - it does not give support under the thighs as the knees have to be so high and as a result we both get tired legs on long journeys. (The only car I ever found that gave such support was a Citroen BX which had an adjustable roll on the front edge of the seat.)

Can anyone recommend a car that will meet our needs? I would guess around 110-120bhp would be the ideal with a kerb weight of about 1400Kg. We are not averse to a not-too-expensive 4x4 if that suits the need so long as it has low emissions and good economy.

We have got used to the good low-end grunt, lack of thirst, and reliability of VAG engines having had a 90bhp Golf III and a Toledo II 110bhp before the Octy. At the moment a Skoda Superb looks as though it might fit the bill but I'm open to suggestions.

Woody - the shortness of seats has been one of my complaints about cars in general, for a long time.

Ironically the Astra sports seats, fitted as standard to SXi and SRi but also to CDX when the leather option is chosen, have an adjustable seat which pulls out up to 60cm to give better support under the thighs.

My son is 6'3" but has a shorter body length than me at 6'0" so his legs go on for ever - he copes with an Astra but will be looking at a Vectra-C (2004-on) Estate next time as they have more drivers seat legroom - the seats are wider than Astra as well.

I have a Zafira CDTi Elite and I find the seats really comfortable. I am 5' 11" and short for my weight (my preferred way of saying a little heavier than I should be). The seats are far better than in current shape Astra loan cars I have had.

New shape Zafiras (55 plate onwards cars) with Design, SRi and Elite spec have a tilt as well as height adjustable seat which I find really helps. Elite spec cars also have a tilt adjustable passenger seat to ensure the passenger is as comfortable as possible.

A Zafira weighs a little more than 1400 kg, so you may be better with the 150 hp model (these also come with std esp to aid stable towing and solo driving). 120 hp models have a tow limit of 1300kg. Trying to find a 4x4 with low emissions could be a challenge.

It must be down to different shapes - I found the Zafira driver's seat more cramped than the Astra!

Roger, what age Astra / Zafiras are you comparing? Current Astra SRi models have lost the extending front cusion. New Zafiras have much more front leg room / better driving position than the pre 05 models.

I was comparing Astra-G and Zafira-A, '98-'04, things may be different on current models.

Roger

I had an 03 Zafira a few years ago and the new model has a far superior driving position. Previously I had an V reg Astra Sport with the extending cushion and I agree that those seats were far better than the ones in current basic Astras.
