Lille Christmas Market

Thinking of taking the 'van to Liile Christmas Market in December - has anyone got any recommendations for sites, is it necessary to book?

Regrettably there are no sites (at least that we could find) in or around Lille. There are sites in surrounding towns but all/any will require a drive and many will be seasonal.
You could try the municipal at Blaarmeersen in Gent which is about 40 miles on free motorway, or the municipal at Ypres which is 20 miles. There is a site at Aire-sur-la-Lys which is 38 miles but we have never managed to find it.
You could of course find a site around Lille and travel into the city by train.
Lille CM is quite large and pleasant. They also have one in Brugges but its small by comparison and very commercial (and full of Brits!)

Afterthought.
If you travel DFDS Dover-Dunkerque try using the discount code ENEC13. Don't know whether it applies to 2013 bookings or if it is for next year only, but it makes quite a difference.
