Anyone know the best way to fit long vehicle markers to the back of the caravan without damaging the caravan and making them easy to remove on return to the UK?

There was a long thread on this subject not so long ago. Not so much on fitting them, but whether they were in fact absolutely necessary. If your total length of outfit is less than 12 meters then you do not need them. Above 12 meters and then legally you do...........but there was a lot of discussion

Yes we did see some of the comments about whether they are strictly necessary. Our unit is over 12mtrs and we dont want to risk a fine. We are travelling over Plymouth/Santander in November until March and our main concern is how to make sure they stay on while we are travelling but will come off in March with the minimum of fuss and damage!

We used white mastic which was recommended by Bailey's technical department. But not next year, we will be like everyone else we saw during our summer trip and not bother....

Thanks for that Nick. The reason we are so cautious is because we were pulled over by the police for no reason earlier this year and knowing our luck it could happen again. What make of mastic did you use, was it particularly recommnended by Bailey?

Christine,

Sorry, I do not know the make, some guy in the technical department sent me some. Apparently they use it for fixing temporary number plates etc. If you do fix plates they are not allowed in the UK or France so it means either covering them (as we did) or taking them off at the border.

Hi Christine,

Like yourself when we visited Spain this year we did not want to risk a fine.We went through border control and a police check point and the plates were never checked or commented on. They were not quite the correct spec, but near enough. We never saw any other foreign vans with plates on.In hindsight I would not bother again with the plates.

Fixed mine on with number plate self adhesive pads from Halfords. They are still on my van from June and I have traveled around 3000 miles,so the pads have certainly held well.

The only other van I have seen with plates on was at Kingsbury water Park this weekend...

We got back from Spain last week having fixed our marker plate with number plate stickers. There were 3 other vans at Portsmouth waiting for the Bilbao ferry with the markers and about the same (over 12 m) without. We too have been stopped in the past without apparent reason so fitted it. I fitted at home and drove to Portsmouth 166 miles away and home again with it on the back and no police who passed us took an interest.

Hi, we travel to Spain and Portugal each winter and have a unit over 12 metrs. Last winter a long unit arrived on site and they had been fined 70 euros on the way down in Spain for not having plates fitted. I have therefore now fitted plates using bond tight fasteners from bondingsolutions.co.uk The tape is like industrial strength velcro, so the plates can be fixed and removed when necessary. The glue on the tape is very strong and stands up to the weather etc. Hope this helps
