Longbeech New Forest

Just come back from the most magical long weekend in the New Forest - havn't been to Longbeech for about 30 years and forgot how truly beautiful it is. So peaceful after the Saturday/ Sunday lot departed, with small herds of deer feeding on the site, plenty of walks amongst the oaks with the odd pony for company and "disturbed" only by the dawn and evening chorus from the birds.

No facilities except water and waste disposal so it's only for us "back to nature" types but if you want a peaceful midweek break in the heart of the English coutryside it's hard to beat.

We've been to Longbeech - it's terrible, no facilities, wild animals all over the place.

Hopefully that will discourage people from going there (and enable us to continue enjoying the peace and quiet!)

Incidently, has anyone else heard the rumour that the C & CC have taken a long lease on all the Forestry Commission sites?

Yes you are correct it is in latest C & CC magazine, they are taking over all forestry sites with immediate effect, however this year they are beeing run as at present but from 1st January 2007 they come under C & CC booking and rules

I really am incredibly lucky to live nearby. The B3078 is a regular road I travel. The northen bit of the Forest is the very best of it in my view - but I am biased!

Myself and the dogs know the area well.

A local guy some years ago took photos every week from the same spot near Frithem and displayed them. It was a stunner. From the stark white and grey of winter frosts to the incredible green of summer - he captured it all.

I have often felt I would like to do the same.

Clive I envy you for living in such a beautiful area - did your friend ever publish his pics? We have a collection of water colours of the "southern side" purchased in Brockenhurst some years ago and would love to add to it. Our Jury is still out as to wether the North is better than the south - need to do some more evaluation visits but have to wait until September as North Wales calls.
