Hi Sean

We have just taken then plunge., we have Bailey Pageant and have been towing with Vectra, worked out at about 90%, however hubby's got problem with back so I need to do everything around the van so for ease have had motor mover fitted, which increased weight slightly although had no problem towing just felt our Vectra was getting on in years and thought best to change now before anything major happens, so we have purchase Kia Sportage on 58 plate, don't pick it up until the 16th but after reading postings on PC forum and much research felt this was our choice, we also looked at Honda CRV & Serento but found Honda kept their value so prices higher and Serento to big

Happy hunting

Hi Sean,

The Sedona is an excellent towcar but might be a bit big for you unless you have loads of kids to carry as well,I use one for pulling a 1900kgs caravan and is an alternative to using a 4x4.Good luck in your choice.

recently we changed our car, for yet another xtrail. I compiled a list of i think 20 4x4 cars that would fit the bill.

In 2004 i could have found say 8 cars to chose from, probably less.

The honda was on my short list, even though i find the car ugly, but deals were poor, and i expect the latest diesel to be fitted?, at present fitted to the accord.

Anyway i am interested in what criteria you have, that brought your choice down to TWO cars, also are you buying new?

Your reply seems to suggest that fitting the motor mover has changed the weight ratio. It doesn't as the weight ratio is based on MTPLM and that doesn't change, no matter how heavy the motor mover is, as its weight comes out of the payload.

We tow a Pageant S7 with a Vauxhall Zafira CDTi 150hp.

They are pretty good value used currently.

However without any info about how many people and stuff you need to carry in the car it will be difficult to make a suggestion. Another important factor is how many miles a year you will drive the car (solo as well as towing) as that can make a massive difference to suitability of various cars.

I use the current diesel CR -V and it is a good stable tow car. The diesel engine is not the strongest in the world, but if you use the gear box, it is not at all bad. I get around 26 mpg towing and anything from 38 to 44 mpg solo. It is a lovely car to drive solo, and so, like most things it is a compromise. We have been all over the UK with it ( towing) and it has been 100% reliable. It is also probably the most comfortable car that I have ever owned.

Hi Lutz

You've confused me know, my understanding was by adding a mover to the van although on 30Kg would increase the MPTLM, Opps don't tell my I've persuaded hubby to change the car when we didn't need to!! Uh Oh!! (its OK he's not a member of the forum)

Having just been forced into getting another tow car due to my wonderful(cough)Renault deciding it needs new injectors, power steering pump, belts etc etc etc , and being totally and utterly sick of the plastic pig (its going to the scrapyard in the next few days)I found a Kia Sedona, 2.9 SE and it is an amazing car for the money.

All leather seats, auto box, lots of toys like rain sensing wipers, electrically folding mirrors, rear windows operated from front seats as well as back.

It pulls extremely well with a tow limit of a good 2000kg and the seats are very comfortable.

Its a big car, more room inside than the Grand Espace, seating much better, in fact everything miles better.

Mine is an 04 Plate and with 52,000 on the clock was

Thanks for advice everyone. To answer a few Q`s, we have two kids, all of us are bike riders, like all I am looking for good Mpg and have fancied a CRV due to this. A family member has a sodona but doesn`t tow and raves about it being his best car ever. Hoping to pay

Sean

We used to have a 56 plate Civic and I looked to upgrade to a CRV for reasonable economy, space and towing ability. We went to our friendly Honda dealers and had a good look round for the Mrs to say 'Yuck we are not buying one of them it is ugly' so I know what you mean.

My concern with the Sedona is that while it will be a good holiday towcar (huge size and weight) it could be a bit much for the day to day use and the MPG if you do a fair amount of solo miles could be a killer.

We have a Honda CRV 2.2 diesel 2009 model. It has been brilliant so far and pulls our caravan with ease.

We didn't know what to buy either but checked out the Honda, got a great deal, plus tow bar fitted at the point of sale.

We love the look of the Honda!

I forgot to add, we have two kids.

The space inside the CRV is huge and the boot space is massive.

It can pull 2000kg !

Thanks Sue, the CRV is not what the wife wants now (pity). So I have taken the plunge and just bought a Sedona TS (used). Again, thanks for all the advice everyone. Happy towing

Sean, have you bought new or s/h?

Reason for asking is there is a possibility(in fact a common problem) that the rear heater pipes are prone to rusting and leaking, but it is an easy fix to DIY and a whole lot cheaper than replacing with Kia new pipes.
