To correct a correction, correcting a correction, I think

The Union Jack is only flown on board a ship. It is at other times only the Union Flag,

The United Kingdom refers to the ancient Kingdoms of England Scotland and Ireland. Wales is a Principality not a Kingdom in this context.

John L is absolutely right, historically the Union Flag only being a union jack when flown aboard a ship - but a little more - it has to be flown at the jack staff which is at the bow of the ship.

The government has accepted the common use of Union jack for the same purpose as Union Flag almost 100 years ago.

This next bit does not refer to John Ls comment

To say that the Welsh are not represented on the flag is not strictly true as at the time Wales was part of the Kingdom of England.

All four nations have fought and died under the Union flag so to suggest it does not belong to the Welsh is more than a little insulting to them.

I like to "rib" the welsh a little as well - being an Englishman from Bristol (there is a lot of rivalry across the Severn) but a little respect please.

Garry, I don't know if you're trying to be controversial or not but I don't see anywhere in the postings above where anyone said the flag doesn't belong to the Welsh so I fail to see how anyone can be showing them disrespect.

All the nations have their seperate flag but I'm sure that the vast majority of people associate the Union Jack as the flag of G.B.

I do however make acceptions to the rule because the Der Der's in my own country like some foreigners (Yanks) believe it to be the English flag.

To correct one of colins corrections.

The union flag/jack isnt the flag of the United Kingdom. The Welsh flag isn't represented.

Come out Kanga, wherever you are, and explain your post. I read it that it wasn't represented because the dragon isn't on the Union Jack, which it isn't lol :O)

"The union flag/jack isnt the flag of the United Kingdom. The Welsh flag isn't represented."

I read that as meaning that the Welsh are in the UK but not being entitled to call the Union Flag their own.

I can't say it is something I am going to get too excited about, but I can see why a Welshman/woman might take offence - I was just making that point.

If a Welshman had said what I have said he would probably have been called paranoid and I think it was worth a comment.

Now - can we get back to the sheepsh*gger jokes!

Right you lot over the border - the MAIN MAN is back. Now regarding all these so called jokes about the Welsh and reference to sheep, goats, etc. does not worry us as we have heard them all before and we are strong, brave and man enough to take such trivia and come back out with our heads held high.

My lack of posting at the moment is a result of my son wanting to use the internet for studies for his finals in Construction Management course at uni. I have to give way for him as his entire future could be at stake.

Liz this computer is a joint venture - he bought it when he was working ready for his studies and I pay the monthly broadband fee. I cannot see the point of us having a machine each as I only use the machine for social pleasure. He has now also bought himself a lap top but I have not as yet ran a telephone point to his bedroom and he will not trust wifi.

Thats fair comment Colin, I gave my first laptop to Daughter, then we had wifi installed here on site, so I purchased another, then I had to share it with hubby could never get to use it, so I gave that one to hubby, hence I purchased my own.

works out fine now. Bearing in mind we do not have to pay perks of the job. Liz

Liz I know you have previously stated that you are a Londoner but I would trace back your lineage to see if you have Welsh blood in your veins. I hope you have because you apear to be of good breeding and stock. It can't all be Anglo Saxon. Just think what his lordship would say. He is very quiet tonight - must be either his Horlicks or chaimber maid.

We were all Celts many years ago until those Anglo Saxons and Normans invaded this island and drove the Celys west and north. Just to add to all the other Welsh humour - What is the definition of a true Welsh man - An Irish man who could not swim.
