M5 - Bristol to Exeter. Just a friendly reminder for the Bank Hols weekend, the M5 through Somerset & Devon is a total nightmare at present and will be especially so tomorrow night due to the very long contra-flow just south of Bristol, then another by Taunton - both infested with speed camers of course! Try to find other routes if you can, as there are bound to be long delays tomorrow night.

The A38, which runs parallel to the M5, is a good alternative when the motorway is very busy.

Some of us are old enough to remember "pre-motorway" when the A38 was the only route available from the Midlands as far as Bridgwater although there were (very slow) alternatives from there on.

Hi,

Yes i will be 1 of those tomorrow night travelling down to Perranporth Cornwall.

Despite the traffic i am looking forward to it now, haven't been on the A38 for years as always use the motorway, Whats it like now i just tend to go with the flow.

But never seem to run into much as always leave home staffordshire around 8Pm so traffic seems better at night

Leaving Staffs at 8pm sounds just fine - it's what we always used to do when holidaying in Ashburton, Devon or Gorran Haven, Cornwall.

Do you know how long the roadworks are there for? , I,m going to cornwall from scotland in July
Mo dont know about the m5 but the a 30 at mortenhampstead roundabout is having a flyover put in and will be roadworks until sept 2007 (although they did remove the cones for this b/h as was the Taunton roadworks. Also once you get past all that lot you have the bodmin roundabout which is also having a fly under put in, road works to early 2007, happy caravaning in Devon and Cornwall.

I live in Devon and travel to cornwall alot with work, if you want to avoid the most of the traffic you need to be past the Bodmin roundabout by 9.30 am on a Saturday morning both ways. Friday evenings are very bad now as well.

this b/h Sat the traffic was quing for nearly 5 miles at around 2pm!!

Roadworks on M5 between Jct 19 & 20 south of Bristol are nearly finished. Should be all over by the end of the month. They'll start somewhere else then no doubt.
