We are travelling from the North West to Dover and according to the AA our best route is M6/M1, so we need a stopover somewhere between Birmingham and London and would appreciate any suggestions. We used to use Breakspeare Way however we do want toilets and washing facilities on site so we don't have to spend extra time sorting out the loo and water on arrival or departure. Any ideas folks please.

Thanks

Hi Kate, we travelled from Lancashire down to Dover last summer. We set off at 5.30pm and with a couple of quick 'comfort' breaks we got to Dover before midnight. We just parked up on Marine Parade for some sleep and were 5 mins from the ferry terminal for an 8 o'clock sailing. Depending on where you are in the North West it might not take you as long as us. We're doing the same again this year but to the tunnel at Folketone.

Hi Kate,

We used to use the M6/M1/M25 via Dartford/M20 to Dover when driving down from Scotland. I now use the M6/M40/M25 via Heathrow/M26/M20 to Dover, which we've found to be easier and quicker (M40 much quieter than M1).

Not sure where you're travelling from or how far south you want to go before stopping but the CC site at Warwick racecourse is good for a stopover.

We prefer to travel from Manchester to Dover M6/M42/M40/M25/M26/M20. As Mac says the M40 is generally quieter than the M1 and we find going anti-clockwise round the M25 better than going over the Dartford Crossing.

We have sometimes set off the night before, after finishing work, and pulled into the late night arrivals at the Chapel Lane Caravan Club site at Wythall. It then makes an easier journey to Dover the next day. We always stay at the Black Horse Farm site before our morning crossing to Calais which makes for a relaxing start to our holiday.

i would recomend using the m40/m25 now that the m25 has been widened and there are no road works on that route, there are roadworks at j9 on the m1 and if you catch them at the wrong time you will be stuck for ages
