M6 Toll Road

Planning route from Devon to Rivendale, derbyshire all the planners send me up the toll road
Is it Quicker?
What alternative is there?
Pro's and con's for and against the £8.60 toll charge?
Is the toll charged both ways?
Plain english please this is new territoty to me

It all depends on what time of day that you will be travelling in that area.
But I would come strait up the M5 - M42 / A42 to the M1 & come off at M1-J25 & down the A52 to Derby

We often use the M6Toll when heading north/ south. Toll is charged in both directions but if you're CC members (as we are) present your membership card at the toll booth and the caravan goes free.

We do use the M6 toll, it is quiet and free running. If you are CC members show your membership card and they only charge you as a car, but you have to go to a manned booth.
I wouldn't go on the M1 and then up to Junction 25. You will then have to cross Derby and there are road works on the ring road. From the M6 toll stay on the A38 towards Derby, (Lichfield and Burton on Trent) then as you get closer to Derby continue to follow the signs for "A38 The North". You will come to one big roundabout, (it doesn't look like a roundabout from where you join it), you will just stay to the left. Stay on the A38 North to the next island (Markeaton Island) There is a McDonalds on your left and an Esso petrol station, Turn left here onto the A52 to Ashbourne and follow the signs to Ashbourne and then through Ashbourne to Fenny Bentley. This will take you up to Rivendale which will be on your right. Derby is local to me. If you want us to talk you through it, get my email off Parksy and I will send you my phone number.
We will be passing you going the other way as we are off to Woolacombe!

A route that I have started to use when heading north to get home to Derby is to get onto the M42 either from the M5 or from the M40 and stay on this to the Tamworth A5 junction 10. Once passed the M6 junction the traffic is considerably lighter so not usually any trouble. Any hold ups are usually south of the M6. The M42(A42) splits for M6Toll traffic about 5 miles north of the M6 so keep toward the left hand side. It is all very clearly signed.
At junction 10, (there are services as you exit the M42), turn onto the A5 and follow this to the A38 at the point where the M6Toll meets it. Follow the A38 all the way to Derby and then follow the directions given by Mel. Going via the A5 only adds about 10 miles to the journey but without the toll charge and is an easy drive along dual carriageway.
The only word of warning that I would add is to be prepared for the steep hill out of Ashbourne. Don't get too close to the vehicle in front (frequently HGVs) as you go up it. If they stop, which they might at the top of the hill where there is a road junction, it may be a job setting off again if you have a heavy or underpowered outfit.

We used it today
If you are registered disabled you can buy a 3 year pass for about £15
This applies to the registered vehicle so long as the disabled person is in the car and covers the car and caravan

Check a half decent map and you will see all.

most route planners have an option that lets you ignore toll roads. Also with Google you can grab the recommended route and change it to one that you prefer, same with most satnavs you can stop it using toll roads and put your own way points in. If all else fails a map and compass can be useful (lol)

Will get the map out over the weekend and go through the routes suggested.

Otherclive...Got the garmin sat nat for car, car + caravan or Arctic truck and pretty sure you can set it for non toll roads (havent used it yet though)so will play with that a well

Your right, not applicable from Devon. We use the toll road several times a year rather than take the chance of holdups on the old M6. CC discount is good.
