OK so it has been decided that it is appropriate for a statue of Nelson Mandela to stand in the square but can I ask a simple question ..............

WHY ???

.............

As far as I know he was a convicted terrorist who spent most of his adult life in prison. Then, on release, became his country's leader.

I have no doubt that he is a nice person but there are many other nice people out there yet we dont erect there statue.

Many people have led their country but we dont erect their statue.

Mother Teresa was no doubt a VERY good person but we didnt erect her statue

so

someone please tell me WHY we have one of Mr Mandela as there are surely more deserving people.

Miester - Considering what happened to him, Mandela could have been supremely anti white, anti western - full of vitriol and bile in the same way Ayatollah Khomeini was on his return to Persia/Iran - and he was not in prison - he was looked after very well by the West staying in Paris at our collective expense. On his return he promptly turned around and bit the hand that fed him.

And of course Iran is a wonderful peaceful country we have excellent relationships with is it not.

In marked contrast Mandela seeks to build bridges, not destroy.

Like Ghandi before him (who was born in SA) - most see him as a good example to follow.

If all you know of his life is that "he was a convicted terrorist who spent most of his adult life in prison - then on release became his countrys leader" - then I tactfully suggest you do a bit more reading.

Please - it will be worth your while.

What about a statue to the likes of Sir Winstone Churchill, Princess Diana, Florence Nightingale, etc. who were all British and did a hell of a lot for the benefit of the human race during their life? Another person worthy of consideration, although not British, would be Martin Luther King as he did a lot for the coloured people of the world and should be admired.

Unfortunately, we live in a politically correct world and that justifies his statue evidently. If his leagcy had been a country that was a shining light of democracy then possibly I would haev supported it, but unfortunately his country is rapidly descending back to the tribal warfare which eptiomised that continent for so long.

As has been mentioned there are indeed far more relevant personnel who would undoubtedly warrant a statue, but who themselves would probably refuse as it was not their style to demonstrate their worth in this fashion, certainly not while still alive.

But as mentioned at the beginning, we live in a PC country where it is the policy to denigrate everything we do, and support all that is anathema to us. At least it will be usefull for the dogs to use.

Why is there a statue for Lord Nelson in the square in the first place?
because it just seemed to fit with Trafalgar Square, you know Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar, and we had a big Column spare at the time and, some lions. seemed loke a good idea to me

The powers that be (Wimpys) have approached my goodself and asked if I would do them the honour of letting them erect a statue to myself.

Apparently there's a spare plinth, well a lump of concrete actually from a demolished church, that they would like to decorate with my statue. The site is in Whitechapel Road by the outdoor market.

They would like the statue to be modelled on my alter ego, the true blood Anglo Saxon named LouwesPhart.

They have already shown me the blue print of LouwesPhart, it is a pile of concrete, coloured with Cadburys chocolate powder and pebble dashed with chocolate chips.

Lord B, your original Posting was about why a statue to a Terrorist?

well probably for the same reasons that the Leader of a Murdering Terrorist Organisation that Killed Airy Neave amongst others is now an MP in our Parliament, I refer of course to Gerry Adams MP!

it must be that this Government Loves Terrorists, Murderers and the like

after all they themselves are Guilty of it as well

This is why Adams is an MP. You may not like it but he was elected by a large majority.

2005 Westminster results (5 May)

*@ Gerry Adams (Sinn Fein) 24,348 (70.5%, +4.4%)

@Alex Attwood (SDLP) 5,033 (14.6%, -4.3%)

@Diane Dodds (DUP) 3,652 (10.6% +4.2%)

@Chris McGimpsey (UUP) 779 (2.3% -3.9%)

John Lowry (WP) 432 (1.3% -0.5%)

Lynda Gilby (Vote for Yourself Rainbow Dream Ticket) 154 (0.4% +0.2%)

Liam Kennedy (Independent) 147 (0.4%)

Valid Turnout 34,545 (64.2%)

Not so much figures as seeking out the facts, thats why debating is easy, once you know how to obtain the facts it makes life so much easier.

AND it can't be twisted because it is FACT.

Thank you, twas I who chose it :O) I'm glad you're pleased. I chose that colour because I have a penchant for plain choc ices. If I'd been eating Victoria plums I would have called in Colemans to give it a mustard tinge.
