Hi Stephen

Best thing to do is go on the website www.whattowcar.com this will give you all the information needed for the match. Unfortunaely we were wrongly advised from the dealership where we bought our caravan and ended up buying an underpowered car for our caravan - if only I had known about the website sooner. We have now had to cut our losses and are in the process of buying a 4x4. Good luck

I suspect that you will find that your van will weigh the same as the car, which is far from ideal. Whilst I know some on this forum will disagree, I firmly believe in the 85% weight ratio is an excellent starting point and would therefor say the van is too heavy for the car.

Fair comments in the replies above but it is often a matter of compromise and, besides, there is no such thing as a perfect match, only that some are better than others.

The first decision that has to be made is whether you are prepared to make a compromise based on how often you are actually going to tow the caravan. There seems little point in aiming for a perfect match if you are only going to tow, say, 10% of your total mileage.

Hi Stephen

Lutz, has hit the nail on the head, we have the Europa 600 and at 1600kgs is similar in weight. I had choices of car and made a descion based on many factors the 85% rule not being one. I tow with 2.2 Mondeo Est, and find that this serves all my requirments. Personally looking at the spec for the x-trail would have no problem with the match you are considering.
