Mazda 6 Diesel

Hi we have a 2007 Mazda 6 Diesel which we are generally please with for touring but have recently discovered an issue with Mazda diesels which had we known before would have made us discard it from consideration.

As the car was out of warranty I recently had it serviced at a local reputable garage as the dealer is a fair way from our home and a pain to get to. We also saved on paying dealer servicing labour rates. A week after the service we had the DPF light (Diesel Particulate Filter) start flashing. Reading the manual it says to consult your dealer and not ignore as engine damage can occur. There were also some horror stories on the web forums so off to the dealer we went.

It turns out that when the oil is changed the oil level has to be reset in the cars computer and this can only be done by the dealer who charges an hours labour to do so!! I took the car back to the garage who had serviced it and they tried 3 different diagnostics tools and none would work.

It therefore looks like you are tied to the main dealer for the life of the car which I thought was against the european rules. To say I am unimpressed is an understatement. Buy one at your peril. As soon as I can afford it I will be back to VW's

I purchased the petrol version recently due to worries about the diesel engine. I don't think Mazda are alone in having problems. Not yet towed with it but I agree its a complete rip-off regarding the dealership issues and must be very worrying for any diesel owners waiting for the expected to happen.

I think this kind of thing is happening all the time now. Cars are getting so technical/complicated that non main dealers do not have the equipment/knowledge to deal with certain aspects.

A little while ago my wife had a Ford Ka. I took it for an MOT at a non Ford garage, and it failed on the emissions tests. I took it to a Ford main dealer to rectify the fault and they said there was nothing wrong with it - the non Ford garage had not used the latest computer software!! So it works both ways!

On the other hand, the Mazda 6 uses the same 2 litre or 2.2 litre Peugeot/Citroen originating diesel engines as Ford, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar etc. and I am sure they don't all get serviced at main dealers, and most of them probably come to no harm, and their owners save a lot of money. Even at main dealers we have very little means of telling whether the service has been done properly, but have more recourse if a fault occurs later. Admittedly we get ripped off by some main dealer charges (mine charges

Did the 6 have a DPF then as early as 2007? We had a 2003 diesel which of course did not have one, but got rid of it quick when at 5 years old started smoking badly. There did seem to be some issues with the original engine if you look at the forums. So the 2007 engine is now a Peugeot/Citroen engine, I did wonder.

My Xtrail DPF was a problem on holiday last year driving short distances at slow speeds, but this year I tried to avoid short distances and also avoid low revs, generally now I drive in one gear lower than I would have and have not had any more problems (or an increase in fuel consumption).

I'm interested in how the new 6 regenerates its DPF when full, on the XTrail you have to drive it at 50 mph for about 20 miles, on the Peugeot/Citroen I belive there is a bottle of stuff hidden away in the rear of the car somewhere.

If I was buying a diesel car again, my first question would be to ask is "how is the DPF regenerated" (cleaned).

This is a good site for Mazda 6s http://forum.mazda6club.com/
