Mazda 6

I am wanting to replace my current Mondeo and having looked around at the various options, have been impressed with the Mazda 6 (Diesel Estate version). The kerb weight looks fine but I just wondered if anyone had any experience - good or bad - of this as a tow car.

Saw this on another forum kerb wt good, max tow 1500 to 1600kgs. tows well. I'll let you know in a weeks time picking up my car tomorrow(Mazda6 est TS2(136psi)) I must admit it all looks good on paper. Checked with my local friendly caravan dealer to check Towsafe: his remarks where christ that can tow a lot. Roger

Sorry Roy I cannot help with towing experience yet as I have only had the car (estate TS 136psi) for a month but the indications are good. On the first two tankfuls it has averaged 47mpg and once on the move with so much torque the acceleration is really impressive. The suspension is a bit on the firm side but this means the handling is excellent, it does not roll and holds its line around corners. It should make a good tow car. About four weeks ago on this forum I asked if anyone had any experience of fitting a towbar to this car but got no replies so you may struggle to get the info you want but good luck.

I have a Mazda 6 Sport 2.0TD.. Haven't towed as much as i would have liked this year with the car.. But when I have all has been uneventful. I only have a 1000Kg caravan so not really pushing it. Get about 30mpg. The only thing I find is it can be a little reluctant to get going without a load of revs...

Without towing I think the car is super... looks great... comfortable and economical and seems reliable... Would be interested to hear other peoples verdicts also..

Hi Roy, many people rave about the latest Mondeo's as being a good car. They could be right I've never owned or travelled in one. It might interst you to know that Mazda has strong ties with Ford, and a relative in the trade tells me that both makes share a surprising number of common parts, so it is likely that the Mazda will have a lot in common with the the Mondeo.

Hi Roy Collected my car did the 600 miles required before towing and hitched up - tow bar was attached by local tow bar fitter arranged through Mazda dealer but not a Mazda accessory - Dealer said their's very expensive so I've got a Witter about half the price! Brought my van back from storage (Lunar Lexon EB max weight 1350Kg) without the stabiliser or the caravan loaded correctly due to no way of checking noseweight all very stable on the 12 mile trip home.

Reloaded van for weekend away for 2 and the dog. On the 40 mile trip to site mixture of dual carriageway, A and B roads found the car to be very capable at towing over a road I know very well where with my previous cars had to do a lot of gear changes to keep the momentum going with the Mazda I had to work much less hard. Driving at 60mph using 2000 rpm. Hill starts had to use quite a few more revs than expected to pull away. Plenty of grip though to pull off very soggy pitch. Even with the van up I still managed to out accelerate a Ford Fiesta away from a set of lights. Very comfortable car with a firm ride and brilliant road holding. Lots of innovative toys to play with. Nearly forgot to say my old mirrors (raydyot)wouldn't stay on so I've had to use the Milenco universal ones that will fit the Vectra. Roger

i recently had the misfortune to have one of these unremarkable cars as a hire car when in Glasgow on Business. I found the overlight power steering tiring just to keep it straight and the manual gearbox very stiff to engage the gears. The switchgear had all the usual japanese labels all over it and i was suprised that the steering wheel didnt have a label saying "steering wheel" etc.

Having not towed with it i cant answer you imediate question, but if hiring again - i would plump for a fiesta - much better drive,. although wouldnt tow much.
