We have a Mazda 6 diesel estate 2003 from new, 62k miles and tow an Oddyssey 462 (1380kg) It towed our previous van very well but now at 90% I find I am nervous over about 55 mph, this is the only reason why I am looking for something bigger. It has been very reliable, loads of power, 41mpg overall average over the 62k miles, about 45 on a solo run, about 27 towing the new van. The weak point on them seems to be the fuel pump which is very expensive, the warning signs apparently are poor starting. As I said mines been perfect. In looking for a heavier replacement I have searched the net including honest john (a good site) and it is difficult to find any car with a totally clear bill of health. The nearest to perfection seems to be the Honda CR-V but I wanted an auto this time..

Hi Dougie

I have a Mazda 6 TS2 petrol estate automatic and the car itself is great. I town an Avondale Dart 556-6 and although it tows the van OK on nice flat roads as soon as it gets to a hill, if you keep it in full automatic mode it will drop down to 2nd gear and then rev like mad until it gets to the speed you want and then it will drop down. I tend to use it in manual mode for this very reason and if I see a hill I will drop a gear manually and get a good run at the hill and try to keep a constant speed.

The fuel consumption is pretty poor on this combination hence me looking for a diesel estate automatic.

I know this is pretty vague but these are my findings and I hope it helps.

People generally write to forums with a question or a gripe, more statistical evidence would be nice. All I can say is in 6 years / 62k miles the only problem was a stuck rear caliper which cost the extended warrenty a pair of rear disks + pads + caliper. Everything else is original including battery and exhaust. The car has just been MOTed and I asked them to check the exhaust in particular as we are soon to do a long holiday, but it was OK.

My apologies if you read my post and it was not informative enough for you Chris but you didn't need to read it.

We have had a Mazda 6 TS petrol automatic for the last three years. Had it since new. The first year, when towing our Swift Charisma 220 it did tend to hunt around the gearbox a bit. On flat motorways it would go to 5th gear no problem, but when it warmed up a bit I was lucky to get out of 4th. Three years on and it tows brilliant. Still wonder about a gearbox oil cooler though. Had we been keeping the car I think I would have had one fitted.

Brilliant car to drive solo and tow. Only the price means we wont be getting another of the same.

Good luck.

Linda
