Mazda Bongo ?? auto towing.

Hi we have a Mazda Bongo 2.5D. This is an automatic ppl carrier / camper . As we have never towed before does anyone have any pointers when using an automatic vehicle?

Cheers Andy and Kate.

Does it already have a towbar? The trouble with 'grey' imports from Japan is that it may be difficult to obtain towbar which is type approved or weight data (maximum GVW, max. gross train weight, etc.). It would therefore be worthwhile having a look through forums dedicated to such vehicles and try to find someone there who has had experience with doing the same. The first thing that you need to find out is what the manufacturer's maximum permissible towload limit is, in particular for the automatic version.

I think I have read somewhere that it is not a legal requirement for the towbar on an imported vehicle to be type approved. Obviously it needs to be up to the job!

That exemption may apply only if the vehicle was fitted with a towbar at the time it was imported. Best to check. However, regardless of any requirement regarding type approval of towbars, one would still have to know what the maximum permitted towload is, and that may be difficult to come by in some instances.

Hi,

The Mazda Bongo has some following in the UK Eriba Touring forum - either towing classic 50's and 60's Eriba Pucks or more modern variants up to 1000 kg.

Automatic gearboxes make towing easy - and if you want I can ask around to see if people made any upgrades to their Bongo.

Have looked it up. According to the FAQs on Towbarsdirect website, "Personally Imported Vehicles that do not have EC Type Approval" do not need EC Type Approved Towbars.

Hi andy & kate

I have had 2 auto cars for towing ,old Rover sdi 3.5ltr and now a Nissan Terrano 2.7 TDI loved them both.

Think about this most new H G V units are auto or semi auto. They can't all be wrong.
